Girlfriend has finally relented and will allow me to book a supercar type day (ie. get to drive some proper motors with supervision on track) as long as she can come too.

Fair enough, one squeeze of V8 and she'll be hooked for life methinks.

I suspect that there are drive a Ferrari days and there are drive a Ferrari days.

What experiences have people had here and where? lots of time in cars, quality of instruction, friendly circuit to newbies?

A couple of years ago a did a Supercar Challenge - think it was run by a company called Tangerine.
Got to drive a Porche 911, Lotus Elise, Dodge Viper, Jaguar XKR and Diablo. It was run on a disused airfield in Leicestershire, mocked up as a track. Couldn't go mental and you had an instructor with you who rated your efforts. Still a brilliant day out. A week later bought myself a Cerbera. Recommended.

I've done a variety of "Experiences" at Silverstone/Drive. They are pretty short really and you are totally at the mercy of the instructor. Last time out in an Elise I had a young Irish guy who was brilliant kept shouting "More Power" and was really seeming to enjoy my driving. Time before I had a complete numpsky arrogant kid who was more interested in getting us round quick so he could text his girlfriend.

I'd avoid the big circuits because of this and look for Airfields etc who will rent you a car and instructor as they have less constraints on their time (Girlfriends permitting!).

There's also a deal on at Last minute or somewhere like that thats doing 2 for 1 at silverstone in the single seaters at the mo.

Look at the Tangerine things.

There's a Supercar Challenge as well as Ferrari Experience which you can spin out into a full day by tagging on the Rally Experience.

In Supercars, you get to thrash the tits off various exotica; Diablo SV, Viper, Maser 3200GT, Exige, 911, 968, Audi TT (well impressive!) although the line up can vary depending on what's been rolled, crashed or blown up yesterday.

Ferrari on it's own is not as good; but it's worth it for the 360M alone although the 328 is remarkably fast and vocal despite it's years. Normally an option on a Red Head too (!) plus the Exige/Maser from above as more (extra cost) optional blasts.

Tag on the Rally bit and it's a great day. I made a complete dick of myself (nowt new, eh?) on the carts which I loved as much as anything I've ever driven due to the resulting (almost) permanent sidewaysism!

I'd love a kart track; quite cerebrally theraputic.

I've done a Club Fiorano day driving 360 manual, 360F1 and 550 and found it pretty dull. Very much depends who co-drives you but even then the braking cones were just taking the piss at 2-3 times what was needed. Won't bother with one of these againg, barring the F1 experience, also run by Tangerine.
What I would recommend is 2 stroke karting, which if you haven't tried it before will not only blow you away, it'll do wonders for your car control. IMO far better, and cheaper, than the car days. These guys do arrive 'n drive www.club100.co.uk/

My Dad and I drove a 308 round Goodwood a couple of years ago.

Nice friendly bunch, pity about the weather (absolutely tipping down from dusk 'til dawn), and for our £80 we each give five laps - more value than a lot of other offers.

However, the 'instructor' we were given was a guy called Brian, who looked more like a mechanic than a driving instructor. And, once lined up in the pits, waiting for our turn, Brian leaned over and said "It's a dog-leg box, so you'll be starting in second. Then I just want you to get into top as soon as possible and leave it there until we finish."

I didn't even get to show off my heeling-and-toeing!

Still, it was a pukka 308 and I can say I've driven Goodwood in a Ferrari.

Decent day at Thruxton:

MGZR V6 (3 laps)
Boxter / SLK (3 laps)
360 (4 laps)
Formula Ford (12 laps)

In the Ferrari, all the instructor kept saying to me was "go on, put your foot down"

Trefor and I did the Tangerine "Single Seater" day at Mallory earlier in the year.

Good fun, excellent fun in the Caterhams at the end, but you didn't get much track time (20 laps in total ?) and it was VERY busy coz they were holding the supercar and classic car days at the same time.

I love the idea and would be seriously tempted, but I decided I could rent a caterham for the weekend (Friday night - Monday Morning) for £250 and couldn't justify spending that much more.

If I were made of money I'd do both. But I'm not.
