Backyard Fireworks - waste of money?
Discussion
For the last 5 nights all evening from 6pm to 11pm people around the area I live in have been letting off fireworks ... what is the attraction? I can understand the fun/enjoyment of a full-on display where £100k+ of fireworks are let off, but a few wizz bangs ... what a waste of money. This and Haloween seem to be taking on a nasty capitalistic theme (is that the right word?). The Americans are infecting us with Haloween for sure!
Oh, and the cat's disappeared - the neighbours kindly didn't wait until we got home to check our cat was inside. I'm sure he'll be back for a feeding once the noise dies down ...
Bah humbug.

Tref - don't worry, the cat'll come back when he's hungry. Our blighters always do.
Know what you mean tho, we went to our kids' school display on Saturday and paid £2 each to stand there in the rain watching the buggers go off. Mind you, a bit of fresh air and all that - beats forking out megadosh to give the kids all of five minutes worth of sparklers etc in the back garden.
Never been a fan of fireworks, not even when a kid.
And Christmas is nearly upon us as if you didn't know ...

Last 5 nights, huh, ya lucky bugger. I've had it for the last 4 to 5 weeks. What the fcuk is wrong with people.
Don't get me wrong, I think fireworks are great in a professional display (not some backyard, pirotechnic, retardedness).
I expect the same bunch of morons will delight me with their tastless OTT fairy lights at xmas.
Bring on IQ tested sterilisation!!
I agree they are a waste of money. Tesco are doing a 'Buy one get one free' offer on fireworks.
It's as pointless as smoking, but with a bang and a bit more smoke.
Haloween is a joke too.
Little kids wandering the streets alone knocking on peoples doors to 'beg'?
(what about all these child abductions and paedophiles about?)
Has anyone ever asked for a Trick? I bet you'd just get a blank look of disgust. Cheeky bastards!
Carol singers are the same.
I usually get a group of about three carol singers dressed in the latest scrote-wear (tracksuit bottoms, kickers sweater and a baseball cap)
and you get
"We wish you a merry Chistmas and a happy new year.....that's it mate!"
and then three hands extended out.
Give 'em some money, and five minutes later, their mates are knocking on your door to perform the same 'service'.
I used to always get caught out not having small enough change, so I now keep a box of 1 and 2p pieces next to the door during this time of year.
I didn't get any trick-or-treaters either because I put a note on the front door saying "No Trick-or Treaters Please".
Bah Humbug too!

What we need is a massive influx of faulty chinese fireworks that blow people's arms off and stuff - show these mongs the error of their ways..
Hmm, have thought of switching their stash to 'industrial strength' buggers. Can just imagine the gaping crater with discarded limbs..
Que evil laugh....
Sorry guys, but I guess I'm a total knobend in your eyes (like I give a flying toss) because I set off £20 worth of fireworks in the back garden for my lad tonight.
* I didn't have to spend 20 mins looking for a parking space.
* I didn't have to squeltch through a muddy field and stand for half an hour being jostled by loads of people whilst said lad asks "is it going to start soon?"
* I didn't have to listen to other people's kids doing the same
* I didn't have to listen to crap music being blasted out by the local radio station's travelling bus
* I didn't have to buy burgers, candy floss and christ knows what else
* I didn't get cold or wet
* At the end, I just went inside and opened a bottle of wine. I didn't have to return to my car, get the inside muddy, fight to get out of a venue, and get caught up in the traffic queues of countless other people trying to leave the same event.
So
you, I enjoyed letting off a couple of whizz-bangs, my lad loved it, and everyone was happy (apart from the miserable bastards having a moan on this thread of course).

I've no problem with back garden fireworks if done properly.
However... next door but one (round the corner from me) has a back garden that intersects mine at one corner. That corner being less than 20 feet from my house. And I'm in the middle of an estate.
So when he started letting off display fireworks at the end of his garden, I thought all hell had broken loose. Windows vibrating, the whole nine yards.
One of my cats is 15 now. I didn't think he'd last, to be honest. And guess which garden all the sh1te will have landed in...?
See, some friends and I on the same estate let off some pretty big fireworks last year. The difference being that we did it in a property bordering the fields, and pointed all the stuff into the field.
This scrote didn't even bother about neighbours or any such malarkey. He can't even claim to be doing it to save schlepping his kids around a muddy field - they're both old enough to drive.
I'll leave you all to guess my conclusions about that lot.
Speaking of punts, I gather the Cambridge display was pretty good this year.

Ban fireworks - no more noisey, smelly, antisocial fun to be had by anybody.
I set some off this year - went round to check with neighbours that it was OK between 19:00 and 21:00.
It's inconsiderate use of fireworks (and cars, drink, drugs, etc) which causes problems - blame people not objects.
Cull the Stupid.

Don't have a real problem with fireworks, but I do think you should have to pass an IQ test at the shop before they'll sell them to you
Every bugger 'round my way was letting them off last night, to the extent that we had a really great display whilst sitting in our front room in the warm & dry! Might not have enjoyed it so much if I had pets on the loose, though.
Unfortunately for those of you with cats & dogs etc, you're just going to have to accept that the world & his wife are going to be letting off fireworks for the period leading up to the 5th and take precautions.
{edited to add:} I thought it was a bit rich when they were still going off at 11:30, mind.

So that's why your name is Ballistic
You miserable lot! I haven't bought any fireworks for the last few years - OK I lived in a flat - but the chance of legally setting off explosions and rockets in your backyard is great! One subversive way of keeping the country at arms, I say. And it's a great way of entertaining the kids as part of a larger party. Didn't you have a happy childhood ?
Some of my neighbours do get carried away though. I found on my drive on the 6th last year a wooden pole, about a metre long. A bit further on was the remains of the rocket. You could still read the writing - organised display only, keep 60 feet back. Where I live the houses are fairly close together! Anyway, no harm done as it missed my wife's MGF by a couple of feet....

Ban home fireworks except for 5/11 (and that's left in begrudgingly)
I've got two cats (used to have four) and it is a pain in the arse to keep them in for every evening for a few weeks. That said, I like explosives and if I couldn't buy fireworks I'd go back to making my own - much more dangerous.
