Hello all.

I'm new on here so I'd just thought I post details of my motor (no pics yet sorry), A bit about myself I suppose. I'm 42 years old and am now a house husband lol. I was a lorry driver for marks & spencer before.

The cars I'v had most fun out of owning are saab 99 turbo, datsun 260z,p6 rover 3500S x 36 lol, Skyline R33 gts-t and last but not least my nissan pulsar gti-r.

Car is a 1994 pulsar GTI-R.

Spec so far is:

Standard engine.
Motec M48 pro ecu.
Quaife gearbox.
Spec 6 paddle clutch.
AP 4 pot front brakes.
pagid rear disc's and pads.
K-sport coilovers with pillow ball mounts.
whiteline front and rear anti rollbars.
every bush has been replaced with polly.
whiteline anti dive kit.
whiteline axle lock kit.
bumpsteer kit.
B&M quick shift.
front and rear strut braces.
cusco 2 point bottom brace.
JGY BB 37 R turbo (good for 550bhp).
JGY alloy fuel rail,
740cc injectors.
Sard type RJ fuel pressure reg.
Koyo 53mm alloy rad.
Mocul 19 row oil cooler.
hybrid front mounted intercooler.
polly steering rack bushes.
polly gear linkage bushes.
forge lightweight pulley set.
janspeed 3" elbow and down pipe.
mongoosed rear section.

I just had it remapped to 1.3 bar and got 386bhp and 340lb's or torque, Not bad for a standard pulsar engine that has done 64000 miles and is as it left the factory lol,

Yes mate I was in the owners club for a long time lol, I restored quite a few, I still really like these cars. The last real rover in my opinion.

Not the fastest thing on the planet but you just have to love that V8 rumble.

Well I have all the bits to rebuild the engine if it does go bang, I have a set of Par forged rods and CP forged pistons sitting on my garage shelf.

My plan is to prove that the GTI-R engine isn't going to go bang just because you turn the boost up past 1.0 bar as so many tunners seem to keep saying, I beleave with the right set up and a good mapper you can get over 400 bhp safely.

But then again I could just be talking 5hite lol.

About what you'ed expect lol hahahaha.

Pulsar's are never any good on fuel mate, I can empty a tank in 80 miles if i boot it, But then I can get over 200 miles if i drive miss daisey lol.

Welcome to the club!

I love the Pulsar, I've hankered after one ever since my first car (Nissan Sunny 3-dr 1.4lx). Ugly as sin but mean as they get.

I'd expect the issue is with piston strength? OEM apps tend to go light for greater efficency with the obvious impact in strength an acceptable trade off. Some modern designs of specialist coated forged pistons do offer very light weight with good strength but their use seems to be fairly limited at the moment.

Providing combustion chamber temps are kept low and detonation surpressed effectively I see no reason why the power figures you quote aren't achievable.

However try and see it from the tuners prospective - its on edge, a bad tank of fuel or WI failiure or similar will lead to a failed engine. The reason most tuners you speak to say 1bar max is that even under poor conditions the engine will stay 'safe' at this level of boost.

Best Regards
Matt

Thanks for your comments Matt.

I agree to a point but if tuners are un willing to push the limits there's no way we'er ever going to find the limits is there, I do agree that owner'e like me have to take responsibility for there own actions though. I fully expect my engine to go pop at some time in the near future,And I haven't fitted water injection for the above reason.

Once i'm a 100% happy with the map which i'm not at the moment as it's hitting the boost cut and isn't very smooth at part throttle, I will then push it to 1.6 bar which see me well past the 400bhp mark on my turbo lol.

In for a penny in for a pound and all that lol.

Oh don't get me wrong, we are more than happy to push the limit until its drum skin tight but for the most part its simply not wise/possible. There will always be people who utter those immortal words "I don't care if it goes pop I want 550bhp" and they'll always be the ones coming back to complain and demand you build them another engine (for free of course!) when it does expire

Theres the road limit, the race limit, the reliable limit and the grenade with a loose pin limit ...... we only do three out of those four

Either way I like GTI-R's and good job with the power figures. Unless you have some very efficent knock detection/control I'd be sorely tempted to get some WI on there!

I like your style matey,I'm hopeing that the motec and a good mapper can keep it safe enough for now .

And don't forget i'm only running 1.3 bar at the moment and to be honest if it holds together at this level I'll be more than happy.

I agree with you though to many people expect far to much from the motors, I'm well aware of who's fault it will be when it blows and that would be mine lol.

But it will be fun while it lasts lol.
