You lot seem to know all about this sort of stuff. Does anybody know where I can get hold of SQL 6.5 at a sensible price? I need it to access some data urgently and v7 is all anybody seems to be able to provide. Cheers for any help at this late/early hour.

What format is the data currently in? e.g. Backup file, detached db etc.

We're looking to buy a licensed copy but it's difficult to find. As an emergency measure we'd consider anything we could install extremely useful! Without boring you with details, we own a license, but the installation disks have been lost/misappropriated.

Adrian, I was in the Greymatter site this morning & thought I'd have a look to see if they still sell 6.5. I couldn't find it, so filled in their on-line enquiry form. This is the answer I revceived:

Greymatter said:Hello, Pete.

I am afraid that SQL Server 6.5 is no longer available, having been superceded by SQL Server 7 in late 1998, which has itself been superceded by SQL Server 2000.

The only way that we can come up with to obtain SQL Server 6.5 would be to buy the equivalent SQL Server 2000 licence(s) under an Microsoft Open Licensing agreement, and make use of a right which is conferred only under the Open Licensing scheme, to "technology downgrade" to version 6.5 (i.e. to use an equivalent older version of the product you have purchased). You would need to obtain a SQL Server 6.5 media kit from somewhere (if you already have a copy of the software and need an additional licence, you can use your existing media, but if you do not already have the software, then you will need to source a SQL Server 6.5 media kit), but you would then be able to install SQL Server 6.5 under the licence for SQL Server 2000.

All this seems particularly unhelpful to you, as its the media kit you're probably after!

Sorry.

{edited to add:} we've probably got some 6.5 CDs kicking around in the office somewhere, but I couldn't possibly be persuaded to run off a copy of them...

Yertis,

I'll have a poke round this evening to see what I have, if not I'll see if I can get hold of a copy.

Matt.

Can anyone remember if SQL 6.5 comes as part of BackOffice Server 4.5?

Yertis.

If Matt can't help you I most definitely DO have access to SQL Server 6.5 media. Buy copies of 7/2000 and you're entitled to use a previous version anyway...so there shouldn't be a problem with installing 6.5 on a box.

Let me know if you need helping out. You would have to promise me faithfully you were covered licence-wise mind...I do a lot of business with Bill's lot and wouldn't want to piss them off.

'mail me if you're stuck.

Might have done, actually. I know it came with the previous Backoffice versions...

Is SQL 6.5 the engine that comes with VB Studio 6? If so, I might be able to get you a copy. You have a licence, so there would be nothing wrong in supplying you a copy of the disks, would there?

If its the one you need, I could send you a cd tomorrow, or alternatively let you download the files off my ftp server (its only get 25K upload though)

Ah ha! We have VB Studio 6, and lurking on there was SQL 6.5 Developer Edition! So thanks for pointing us in that direction. Many thanks guys when we eventually meet up.
