I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet on PH, but I was wondering how you Brits had come to the point of making such a fuss about the privates lives of famous people.

This has come back into my mind since I saw the recent loads of blah blah with the ex-butler of Diana.

What are the historical reasons for the overall British attraction/fascination to *sentionalism*?

Well, Thom. If you French hadn't killed our Princess, no-one would be interested in her bloody limp wristed butler.

So, in effect, it's all your fault.

The only thing more limp wristed than that butler has been the French Governments attitude to the UN over Iraq.

Oh come on, don't start a french-bashing thread again.
My question is sincere and I didn't mean to offend anybody.

You started it Thom. You killed our Princess. Nobody was interested in her until you lot wasted her in a subway...

But Mel, we don't really want them involved in war with Iraq, unless we need some nice food cooked for the troops.....

Now let me see, shall we stand up against the worlds current greatest threat to peace, a twisted dictator with an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction and the inclination to use them or shall we blow up an unarmed hippy ship while it's tied up in so called friendly states harbour ?? I know we'll take the french option.

Now leave our princess' light in the loafers butler alone.

What are the historical reasons for the overall British attraction/fascination to *sentionalism*?

It sells newspapers and keeps the fact that we got stuffed at cricket again off the front pages.

Must admit Thom, one thing that always annoys me is that French Police always target British cars, even my Dad was fined for a trumped up "motoring Offence" in France. We are victimised by the Gendarmes just for being "foriegn"

And yet the British police never target foriegn drivers.

Why is this?

I don't know Thom, but I think its bloody sad.

I turn on the news and I want to know what is happening in the country and world that really matters.

Not who is shagging who or what. I don't need to know about their lives.

I think if the general public, newspapers and TV news etc. concentrated on the 'boring' stuff then maybe there would not be so many numpties and clueless people on these shores.

Even BBC news at 06.30 feels it needs to tell us what happened to some sado who chooses to do their washin in the public. Total utter bollocks.

Now come on boys, simmer dowm there's no need to go back to 1066 on this, they won remeber....

In answer to the first question, the situation is simple. Lots of bored people sit at desks doing shitty jobs (like mine) and see the these rich, exciting, beautiful people having rich, exciting beautiful lives.

No one wants to deny them that, but we English seem to think that if we know enough about these people golden people, we will actual know them. By that rational, they then become aquaintences(sp?), and their golden light will be cast on us too.

It sounds like Bull, but I sadly I believe it's true.

I think we also have a bit of a feeling that they owe us because we gave them their fame, but if you ask them, they'll prattle on about having had to work sooooo hard for it and the sacricices they've had to make.

Both sides want to get something for nothing, hence
no one is happy. The papers want to make money so they give the public what they want, but the Celebs don't want to give...ergo the privacey issues.

I'm sure this isn't just an English thing, though feel free to straighten me out on that.

Yeah, I like the Alf Garnett excuse for the Cricket...

" We gave the game to the World, but we never got round to showing everyone how to lose at it"
