Which Super Saloon?

My old man's just had a good deal come off and is going to treat himself to a new car. He's thinking of a Mercedes S55 AMG which I think is probably a great choice, but he doesn't seem to have considered anything else. I've asked if he's considered an M5 but he says he thinks the ride might be too firm to be comfortable for everyday use.
What else should I suggest to him? Either new or 6 months old, and up to about £70k (possibly more for something that's not going to plummet in price too much).

OK, some of these are cheaper, but I'd definitely want to try them before laying out 70k
I think he fancies something a level above the Audi in terms of quality. He's not a jaguar fan. He's not going to want any of the runnig costs of the 456. I suggested the M3, but I think he wants something more grown up.
I suggested the new Range Rover to him, but I think he has preconcieved ideas about how they are from how they were 15 years ago.
Could maybe pick up a new(ish) SL500 / CL500 for that money from the right place.
S55 is probably fantastic, but its not small, new E55 is getting rave reviews and is basically a 4door SL55 by all accounts (same engine, same power same 0-60 etc), maybe worth considering (if you can get an order in reasonable time...)
Also in that money range you could pick up a very tidy S/H Bentley.
JAG XJRR perhaps..

I think he want's to steer away from anything too exotic including Bentleys and Astons. He's had Maserati's before and is no longer a fan. He doesn't want it to be too massively expensive a purchase. Just a treat.
Willdew- building up a picture of your dads' likes & dsilikes from your replies, he wants a bit of an Uber-saloon but nothing too exotic. I suspect that a Merc would suit him very well, the main choice is over which one. Outside possibility is one of those BMW 850 Ci or CL- you know bit of a wedge in profile, but won't be anywhere near 70K (few people buy houses or cars at much less than their maximum budget).

Gone are the days when you had to buy 2 Jags to run one... they're pretty good cars, and if he's getting a 6 month old one from auction, he should be able to get himself a bargain.
I'm surprised that you think tha tthere's much out there that's better quality than the Audis. They are about as well put together as anything else on offer I'd have thought.
If he's concerned about losing money on it, perhaps he should be looking at older than 6 months. He'll surely be better off looking at a 1 year old car, or even 2 years with low mileage.
At the top end of the market, as people will tend to have several cars, you will find two year old examples with only 20k or less showing. As they'll have lived in a garage, and been valeted and servicesd regularly, they should make a lot of sense.
Every car I buy, I am able to walk away from without any pain if it catches fire etc. I would not be spending 70k on anything if I needed to think too much about resale value.

My old man's got an S3, and we've use of a company A8 every now and then.
Bloody good cars, but strangely not as involving as they should be... something that is often echoed by the automotive journos...
Interestingly, in the mags at least, the good old M5 still seems to be holding it's own against the meglomaniacs from Ingolstadt and Stuttgart.
Maybe that often reported 'sublime chassis' really is the masterstroke and in all but the most arrow straight, barren autoroute situations, it's overall repertoire still delivers the best package of sensations?
Then again, have you SEEN that E55 AMG?
