Another "pensioner in wrong way" story. I don't understand why the coroner is bound to record this as accidental death though. I wonder if the innocent driver of the other vehicle had been killed, would this have been given as accidental death too? I would have thought that where there was such clear incompetence there should be a case for misadventure...

Driver tragically killed after going wrong way
By Kris Hall
PENSIONER Jane Bradshaw was killed and her husband injured after she drove the wrong way down a dual carriageway, an inquest heard.

Mrs Bradshaw, of The Cottages, Owlswick, near Princes Risborough, had just pulled out of a layby on the A41 near Bicester, when her car was struck by an oncoming vehicle travelling at 60mph.

The inquest, held last Thursday, heard how the 74-year-old's husband, Kenneth Bradshaw, had blanked out all memory of the horror crash on April 19.

Dr Nicolas Mahy, consultant pathologist who carried out a post mortem examination on the pensioner, said she died as a result of multiple injuries caused by the crash.

Giving evidence, Fiona Chalk, the driver of the Peugeot which was in collision with Mrs Bradshaw's car, described the tragic moments before the collision.

She told the coroner: "I was probably travelling at 60mph. I noticed a reddish car coming out of the layby.

"I thought it was pulling out to get on to the carriageway with the rest of the traffic so I indicated and pulled over to the fast lane to overtake.

"The next thing I knew the car was straight across the fast lane facing me. I immediately slammed on my brakes to do an emergency stop.

"The car skidded and I remember shutting my eyes. When it impacted my car went back. I opened my eyes and saw the other car on its roof right in front of me."

Passing motorists alerted emergency services to the accident, and Mrs Bradshaw was taken to hospital where she was later confirmed dead.

PC Richard Medway of Thames Valley Police, said there were clear signs indicating the direction of the dual carriageway from the garden centre which the Bradshaw's were leaving.

Recording a verdict of accidental death Nicholas Gardiner, coroner, said: "I can conclude from the evidence that the events were clearly accidental and I have to record a verdict of accidental death."

That is accidental death - caused by stupidity.
But you can bet that now there will be calls to make it a 20 limit past all Garden Centres

You can also pretty much guarantee that she was chatting to her hubby about the lovely petunias they'd just bought, and where they were going to plant them in their garden.

Cynical I know, and a shame that someone has died, but lets get the perspective right - she got it wrong because she wasn't paying attention.

She would also probably have been one of those campaigning for slowing everyone down, but would have been incredibly vociferous against the need for improved driver training. Bet she wasn't wearing her glasses either.

Bugger off Ben !!! yes I agree if it has not effect on the rest of us, but inflicting the pain and anquish of a car accident onto another passing motorist is not in my opinion how people should be "allowed to kill themselves"

All I was saying is that although it seems like a good idea we can't "cull the stupid" and while I'd like to think that when I'm an old (er) git and realise I shouldn't be on the road I'll hand my licence in at the nearest police station, it's not going to happen.

What was your suggestion ? Ban accidents

Of course inflicting the pain and anquish of a car accident onto another passing motorist isn't right, I just thought that "Least the fcukwitted old hag didn't take anyone else out with her" was a bit harsh that's all
