Cheap as it gets

Reading about cheap cars on another thread got me thinking back to my student days. I bought a Vauxhall cavalier for 50 notes, ran it for 11 months and scrapped it for 35 notes( back in the days when they weighed your car and gave you scrap value without looking for bricks in the boot)

Crap car but it never went wrong and was dirt cheap.

Anyone do better ??

I bought an Anglia van for a pint of beer, ran it for 20,000 miles and sold it for £45.

Bought a Mini for £5 when I was 13. Had a great time thrashing it round the fields for a few years. Sold the weller wheels of it for £100 and got £20 from the scrap man.

Had a Mini that failed its MOT and swapped it for an upright hoover which was to be a wedding present for my sister in law.

How sad is that.

Friend and I took 4 cars (all non-runners, stacked up on the back of a flat bed) and drove 1 other to the scrapyard and got £115 for the lot.

We went straight to the toy shop and bought a scalextric set and two additional cars, plus a 4 pack of beer.

Children....no, I think we were about 23-24 at the time!

a mate gave me a D reg Fiesta for nowt. I ran it (without a single problem or £ spent) for 6 months and then flogged it for £130.

When in early teens we got a Lancia Fulvia for £25 which we got running and thrashed around closed roads for a bit. Also got a nice XJ6 for £100 as far as I remember.

My brother bought a Scimitar off me for £750, drove it almost trouble free for 18 months then sold it on for £1400.

I had a Nissan Micra given to me by a great aunt who I hadn’t met for about 10 years, she said take it and do what I want with it, so after about 6 months I swapped it for a mini, the mini got written off a few years later and the insurance paid out £800 bought it back for £80 then got another mini for £30 and swapped all the bits over!
