It has long been an ambition of mine to build my own house and with pretty ordinary houses now priced at pretty extraordinary prices I am looking for land in the Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire area. Does anyone know of any land for sale or have any words of wisdom on the subject.

My parents are in the process of doing exactly the same, but in North Wales. From conversations with them the cost saving is considerable, plus you can define the shape of the house you want.

You may want to check out some US software called www.floorplan.com/ it is not CAD software, but is very ggod for sorting ideas out in your head before you get a architect involved.

There are also quiet a few website out there on the subject and a magazine available in WH Smiths.
