Hey all,

im very very tempted to buy a cheap off road motorbike, doesnt need to be road legal or even pretty - just something with about 250cc and enough balls to scare me witless on the farm tracks near my house!

a) How much should i look to spend? ive seen some for sale for about £200, which is about what i want to spend TBH (only want an old thing!)

b)Where should i look for them?

c)Any particular models to consider/avoid?

Any help appreciated guys..

Cheers

Dave

First advise is check where your riding it.

Locally to me "green laneing" is fairly popular but as in anything the arseholes are spoiling it and as such plod now have a few DR400's that they use to keep an eye on things. Basically Footpaths and Bridleways are a big NO NO, Private land is dodgy without permission and that only really leaves Byways for which you need to be taxed, insured and road legal. We're lucky in the fact we've got some pretty challenging and extensive byways to play on but be carefull. As for what bike in that price range they're all likely to be nails so it's luck of the draw.

I live in rural Wiltshire and i work in a coverted barn on a farm, so theres no shortage of places to ride - im pretty sure the farmer would let me rag around his lanes, he'd probably even let me store the bike up here if i wanted!

Good advice tho, thanks.

As for all being nails - yeah youre right, what im really after is one thats cosmetically very tatty, but mechanically reasonably sound - its only for me to muck around on anyway. Part of the idea is to learn a little about bike control and just enjoy myself - if i decide id like to get into it as a sport ill just buy myself a decent bike - but if i just get bored or dont have time, i havent really lost much!

Thanks again

I sold a road legal KMX200 not so long ago for 300. It had plenty of life left but looked rough.

I know this doent help you but they can be found

The place to get a bike I think is in Newcastle, Westgate Road. I dont know if Mel knows it but proberly.
This is a long road with only bike shops after bike shops but proberly too far for you to travel.
go to the supper market and get one of those free car add papers, they normaly have a bike section or there could even be one for bikes

Thanks very much guys! I rode a KMX125 whilst i was in college as a friend of mine owned one. Your KMX200 sounds like just the sort of thing im after - i dont care a jot how the thing looks provided it goes, ill undoubtedly drop it at some point anyway!

Newcastle - a little too far to go TBH - im based nr Salisbury, Wilts!! Thanks for the advice tho, it might be worth taking a look if i really cant find one!

Thanks again guys...
