Friends of the Earth
Discussion
Friends of the Earth have a rather scary poll on their website. You can vote for 'lower fuel taxes' or 'investment in public transport'.
The scary thing is that the vote in favour of public transport is running close to 90%, whereas a similar poll in June was 90% in favour of lower fuel taxes.
I would never even contemplate accusing such a Good Cause of dishonesty, but there does seem to be something strange here. Perhaps they should re-string their abacus....

A group of us on evo got together to sabotage that a while back,
hence the suprising result, but obviously we don't keep visiting like the tree-huggers do, so we were always destined to loose.
Looks like they've stopped accepting votes now anyway, I tried a few times but the counter didn't change.

Get voting, chaps, and feel free to send a fax to Gordon Brown with the help of their website which provides you with an easily molested form letter...

Dear Gordon Brown,
I am writing to ask to you to make cuts in the fuel tax.
I believe there are sound environmental, social and economic reasons for ignoring demands to maintain and increase fuel tax.
Climate change is fundamental to the nature of the planet - has been since long before we arrived, will be long after we perish.
It is said that motoring contributes to 25% of all man-made carbon dioxide emissions. However, it is also said that man-made emissions contribute in the region of 2.5% to the amount of greenhouse gases in our environment.
One volcanic eruption is capable of emitting more greenhouse gases than all of the cars on the planet in a year.
So, motoring accounts for 0.625% of the overall makeup of gases contributing to the 'greenhouse effect' without which the planet would be largely uninhabitable, being considerably colder.
Of couse, carbon-dioxide is not the only greenhouse gas, in fact it's not even the most abundant. Methane takes that honour - a gas produced by living matter in great quantities.
The biggest threat that we face today is the throttling of the economy by a faction determined to regulate, restrict and prohibit at every turn, enforcing restricion of free movement on the basis of a highly speculative if not entirely specious environmental argument.
The high fuel tax restricts the ability of British businesses to respond to the competition from other EU countries with whom we have free trade. Further, high fuel tax contributes to the significant financial burden on every car owning member of the public at a time when vast tracts of the country are practically inaccessible by public transport.
For these reasons I urge you to cut the fuel tax.
Finally, I'd like to thank the Friends of the Earth website for providing a platform for me to air my views.
Regards,
