Just shows the Canadians have their share of loonys too..
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is launching a new campaign hinging on the case of accused Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton, charged with murdering 15 women at his British Columbia pig farm, according to a copyright story in the National Post newspaper.
The PETA ad asks readers to pay tribute to the victims of Pickton's alleged killing spree by becoming vegetarians. The text-only ad does not refer specifically to him but under the headline, "British Columbia . . . " it describes the horrors allegedly committed against missing women.
"It's still going on," says the ad., which continues: "Please remember that this scenario is reality for more than 640 million sensitive individuals who lose their lives every day in this country for nothing more than the taste of meat."
The ad ends with the suggestion: "If this leaves a bad taste in your mouth, become a vegetarian."
The ad was rejected for publication in The Province newspaper in Vancouver, but PETA officials said they are intent on running it in newspapers elsewhere in Canada as the prosecution of Pickton escalates.
Bruce Friedrich, director of vegan outreach for Norfolk, Va.-based PETA, described the rejection of the ad as a minor setback.
"I will be very surprised if we can't find some papers in Canada willing to run the ad," Friedrich said.
Pickton, 53, is accused of murdering 15 of 63 women, mostly drug addicts and sex-trade workers, who have disappeared from Vancouver's tough Downtown Eastside neighborhood since the mid-1980s. He was arrested in February, shortly after police sealed off the pig farm east of Vancouver where he lived with his brother. The investigation has since escalated into Canada's largest serial murder investigation.
According to the National Post, PETA's ad has horrified the families of some of the missing women. Sandra Gagnon, whose sister Janet is among the missing women, described the PETA campaign as gruesome and ugly.
"I've seen these people on the news. They're friggin' weirdos," Gagnon told the newspaper. "How can they bring up something like this when we're dealing with murdered loved ones and missing loved ones? They're insensitive."
Friedrich told the newspaper he was surprised by the reaction of the families.
"I expected the ad to be provocative," he said. "I didn't expect family members to comment one way or the other."
