Company name ideas (Automotive)

I saw how many replys the name for the copywriting agency got so I thought I would try my luck with the brains that inhabit PH for this one.
Buddy of is mine setting up his own business repairing, modifying, tuning etc mainly German cars, of which a large proportion will be Porsches. Also he will be selling lots of cars of different sorts, from budget hatch backs to quality porkers etc. Basically he is wondering what to call the company.
My ideas so far consist of-
RS engineering
GT Engineering
or his surname with engineering as a suffix.
Plus a couple of semi joking ones such as Achtung cars & Blitzkreig motors.
Ideas on a postcard to the usual address please.

I have been both a sole trader and a director of (6) limited companies all formed in the last 8 years (only a director of 1 now!!), so I know a little about this. One of the most important thing these days is to check your intended name against a directory of registered trademarks, if someone has registered a trademark and is carrying on a business that could have some vague aspects similar to yours, then pick another name.
Useful website is www.companieshouse.gov.uk on this you can check whether anyone has registered your intended name by searching a list of registered companies (therefore you need to pick another) and there is also a link to the trademarks database.
The trademark issue is becoming really important especially as large companies have teams of lawyers looking for trademark infringement. PetrolTed also knows a bit about this.
If you are setting up as a sole trader or partnership then you can call yourself anything (within reason see following sentence), a bank will require proof of your trading prior to opening an account. However you must still check the limited companies and trademark lists, as for instance you could not set yourself up as Sky Television and undertake a vaguely TV related activity or attempt to pass yourself off as Sky Television.
Unfortunately this is a minefield and with the government clamping down on freelancers and forcing them to become limited companies through taxation changes, (IR35), the number of registered companies has increased dramatically in the last few years.

Anything with Porsche in the title is potentially very dodgy as Porsche no doubt is a worldwide registered trademark and they (and their lawyers
) will probably move heaven and earth to protect the good use of thier name (and their pockets, as the profitable car company, are very deep). Unfortunately with the world of litigation becoming more common, you have to tread a very careful path. Remember Porsche even had to change the name of the 901 to 911 because Peugeot lawyers objected!!
I would suggest that 'yourname' Engineering is probably relatively safe unless 'yourname' is common, but do check at companies house, you can always be Porsche Specialists.

When checking at Companies House (which you can do online www.companies-house.gov.uk) make sure you look for names similar to yours as well as just identical ones. For instance, no one may have GT Engineering, but if you go three pages down or up you may find G.T. Engineering or Gee Tee Engineering etc.
If there is potential to cause confusion between your name and an existing one then you can't use it.
