Those flaming firemen...

Some of you may have noticed my previous comments along these lines previously, but I feel compeled to repeat them, mainly due to a new item on the BBC website:

I have done some work previously for a police force "up t'north". They were the first to introduce a shared control and communications centre for the police and ambulance. Admittedly at first everyone opposed it, but after a trial the evidence told the story:
1) Police were happier as they had direct access to ambulance services quickly without any middle-men or phone calls and know exactly the progress of a call-out.
2) Ambulance service were happy due to the reduced response times as they had the information from the horses mouth so to speak.
3) Overall co-operation was up and more information, control and efficiency was possible by sharing the information and call handling process.
Even spent a lot of time talking to a police controller about this and he was originally very sceptical too - however, completely won over and very happy with the fact that he is providing a better public service now - which lets be honest is what it is all about...
So the police and ambulance managers said "lets get the fire service in this then". The instant response from them was "if you do this then we will strike"... now thats a progressive, sensible and reasonable thing to do then....
EVERYONE says that it is a good idea - Police, Ambulance and now the Army. It saves money, improves communications and ultimately improves the service to the public. So how the hell can the firemen say that it is disasterous? And the comment about making it a call centre just stinks of the fact that they just dont have the faintest clue as to the reasons for this....
It just sucks and it just one example of the fact that the fireman are playing with fire.... (sorry for the pun). Public support is on the decrease and they are looking like they are going to loose BIG STYLE...

Lets just let them strike indefinatly, I presume they aren't getting paid, we are getting an OK service off the forces, the country hasn't burned to the ground yet, and while the army is busy over here we can't go and bomb Iraq, result all round 
And why are the firemen allowed in the firestation to keep warm, watch tele, play on the X-Box, etc when they are on strike, they should be outside the gates, huddled round their flaming oil drum (which surely is a fire hazzard), miners didn't spend there striking days sat down the pit did they?

I've got an alternative theory about the firemen and it might get some people's backs up;
It's common knowledge that for every 1 fireman there are 200 applicants.
So; if you are apply Supply and Demand to this scenario the logical approach would be to reduce the amount that firemen recieve in order to balance out demand with supply.
If you apply that to the nursing situation then they deserve the 40% pay rise.
On a slightly seperate note;
Firemen don't do overtime and haven't done for 25 years.
They get 21k for 4 days work (pro rata that salary and it's not that bad). It also allows them the opportunity to do something else. And they do.
The govt is not going to give in and settle this dispute with a 16% rise. The govt can't be seen to give the firmen that much as there are currently 23 other public sector pay deals in the pipe line. The govt can't and wont.
The guys on the green goddesses get 9k a year (ie the young Privates). Think about that for a minute. And the army can't strike either.
I just think that everyone seems to think the sun shines out of these men (and to a certain extent it does) but there is another side(s) to this strike.

Ummm nope - drive past any fire station now and listen for the honks of support - conspicuous by their absence ......
What does make me fume tho is that we wont go and take the damned fire-trucks - we paid for em, we need em. Seen a couple of green goddesses going into action and its laughable - 4 police cars required to clear the traffic for something thats struggling to get up to 20 mph..... and backfiring like a good un. Laughable if it wasn't so potentially tragic.

Oh here we go. Well I have never needed their services my whole life but if I ever needed to be cut out of a car of course I woule be grateful - but it also their job and duty to do so. They don't do it because they love you. In fact the most respect I have is for the Retained fire fighters.

I think you might find that those of us that have 'no respect' for the firemen at present is largely due to the fact that thay are a 'Public service' that attempting to hold the country to ransom and putting the general public 'at risk' with their narrow minded action.

Just cos they "might" help me at some point in the future or past does NOT mean I have to respect them at this time. On the information available to me on the whole scenario, neither they nor the Government are deserving of our respect.
But then I detest Government anyway, so thats a given

Now heres an idea, and even better than my £3.60/£36.00 per hour sugestion (on another thread somewhere) even if I say so myself.......
Stelios Haji-Ioannou the EasyJet bloke is at a loose end now, how about EasyFire, you can have your fire put out much cheaper but only on certain days and at certain times and there'll only be a limited number of cheap fires, and they reserve the right to cancel your fire and rearrange it for another time or location

Yes, either that or those with respect for them will lose it when during this 8 day strike they die in a burning car because a Green Goblin full of real dedicated people who actually do risk their lives and look after us is struggling to wheeze it's way up to 20mph and using the resources of the police force just to get it there. All because they want a huge pay rise and want to be able to do a 4 day week (2 days considering they sleep for 2 nights!) so that they can ean extra money driving taxis.

I've got to the point now where I just they can all sod off. Give the army lads and ladesses a little pay rise, they'd be happy with it. Sack the firepeople if they won't come back to work and let the army get on with it but using proper equipment. We could even get all the red engines painted green to make them feel at home with the money saved
