I know this is way off topic, but I've got a bit of a dilemma - After 6 years in Academia I'm finally round to the applying for jobs stage, and getting interviews. What I want to know is (and I know it sounds a bit daft), will a Ponytail potentially count against me, and would I be better off getting my hair cut? I've heard conflicting theorys on this from various people, and thought there must be lots of recruiting types on here, and I'd really value your opinion.

Cheers,

Grant

All depends what the job is I suppose.

What sort of field?

It depends on the job/company that you're going for.

In the final analysis, no company will look at you and say "he hasn't got a ponytail, we can't give hime a job", but some might look at it the other way around.

In my industry, there are loads of bloke with girls haircuts, and they seem to get jobs.

James

PS. Get your hair cut. Hippy!

I've worked in recruitment for he last few years.

I recruit for the financial services sector in the city and here a ponytail would definitely be a no-no. However; if you're applying to be a raodie with "The Quo", I'd think it would do you no harm at all.

The oil/petrochemical sector can be a very corporate world, so I'd recomend you get it cut - but then again, if you'd be working on a rig I don't think it really matters.

People have preconceptions - you can't avoid that. Remove as many of them as possible before you get into the room.

Me long hair for years, lots of interviews for other jobs with no luck. Cut it off and got the next job I went for. So I say cut it, it will grow back soon enough once you've got the job

Don't think Seaman will need another job as he's already a millionaire.....

Get the ponytail off, it will definitley count against you. Personally I think that's wrong but I know what these people think, I am a manager myself and I know what my bosses are like in interviews.

Get your personality across and try to show you have a sense of humour without making a prick of yourself...

My only other advice is not to get dissapointed if you are unsuccesful and remember "what will be,will be"

Cheers for that guys, looks like I'll be off to get a haircut for the first time since New Labour came to power

Don't want to risk not getting a job I want over something daft like my haircut.

A nice sensible Mohawk it is then

Hmmm.. I had long hair in a pony-tail for a few years when I was younger. Was fine in the jobs I was doing, but when I progressed beyond the student layabout social stratum I found it really difficult to get laid so I got it all cut off and got the job done

You know what makes me cross?

Nothing, actually.

Unless you're younger than your employer, then you need the haircut and all the arse licking shite that goes with it - and even then the little scrote is going to Ricki Gervais you anyway with all his new found pow(d)er. Even if you're better qualified and more intelligent than him. An interview is a pantomime - treat it like that and play to your audience (don't wear tights though). Is the job reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly special?

No Fats, tow the line, if it's the job you want. Then it should be yours. £ork your way up, growing your hair (and anything else you fancy growing), then get the little jumped up twot sectioned for being hairist.

Yours, baldy.

(I actually sailed through my interview...)

(I'm self employed...)

Get your hair cut,
buy a decent conservative suit (not Boss or Eytie shit)
clean your black shoes to a high polish,
wear a white shirt and a dark tie,
don't speak in Estuary or use the glo""al stop.
Then when you speak to him/her use Sir if not introduced
and DON'T use the US over familiar first person christain name!!!!
Then show them your paperwork..........
It sounds like bumlickin', it is, but do it and get your own back at a later date!

Only against Boss because they produce using "slave" labour in Taiwan and Shengsen!
