Optimax where have you gone?

Don't know if it something to do with the big fire, but all my local garages seem to have fuel, but no optimax.
I know that this has been the subject of lots of previous threads, but just wanted a very simple and quick answer of what would be a good alternative as I am nearly out of fuel and need to take her for a run.

You could try BP ultimate, although shows as a 97octane, quite a number on the thread use it. Can't say i have noticed any real difference between the two, although currently use Optimax, but have noticed number of garages supplying declining slightly (some where changing to another supplier). There have been a number of views about the various higher octane petrols from various suppliers, i would suggest that, in the absence of any others, any of the higher rated ones would suffice. Some have said they have used 95octane with no problems, personally i wouldn't be in favour of that as 98 is recommended. EVO magazine Jan 06 magazine has an interesting article on the various fuels, and one comment they made was that the higher rated fuels seem to be more affected by ageing, so buy from somewhere with a high throughput if possible. Some Tesco also now do 99octane, but seems to be more easily available in S East.

Hi razorman,have been using Optimax,BP Ultimate,Total Excellium 97,Esso Supreme 97, can't detect any difference in normal driving,so I'd say just ensure you use a "super unleaded".

i work with someone who has a 5ltr chim and he has always used ordinary standard unleaded and never had any problems...i use optimax most of the time bt fill uo with standard unleaded about every 4th fill...i have had problems but i dont think it is to do with the petrol

Hoy Andy don't mis-quote me what I said was I USED to use standard but now I use optimax then again I was going at work tonight then tomorrow then off til after new year thank you

Read January's Evo Mag they have tested all the brands. There verdict---Optimax, but not by much!!!
I put whatever is available in mine and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Trev.

yes the the price difference for the small difference in performance.

Optimax 94.9 and tesco 89.9 at my local

Can any experts validate the following predices?

My missus Nissan 300ZX has knock sensors and a fully digital ignition system. It automatically adjusts the ignition timing and hence runs better on higher octane petrol. I believe most modern engines including the SP6 and AJP8 have the same thing (although I don't know why the Red Rose models had a 95/98 button).

My distributor equipped Griff on the other hand runs exactly the same ignition advance regardless of fuel. Any performance / economy improvements are on the general quality of the fuel and detergents, not the octane rating. To take advantage of a higher octance fuel, the ignition has to be advanced by hand (mine has been set for Optimax).

Eventually got some in Amersham but there was no Optimax available there.

Ditto. I have given up with Optimax, my type-R runs much much better with Tesco 99...

All Sainsbury's fuel is supplied by BP - well every time I've seen a delivery at Sainsburys it's been a BP tanker.

So, BP Ultimate at 86.9p/l sounds okay to me. My Cerb is quite happy on it.
