Sorry to post here, but the SAAB forum looks so quiet and I can't hang about.

Wife's Saab 95 threw it's serpentine belt, which may have caused or just finished off the engine. Looks like it suffered from oil starvation, so now has growling big ends, and not long for this world. Shame as the rest of the car is nice (95 2.3t SE auto), but just not worth replacing as '97 car.

My question is would it be worth my while trying to flog the rest of the car on here or ebay, or would I be wasting my time, give up and scrap it? The alloys and P6000s alone must be worth a bit?

Contact Matt_fp he may well be able to

a. Fix it for you

or

b. might be interested in it for bits / repairing for himself

Thanks Mustard - have done so!

If anyone thinks it's worth it, I'll stick an ad in the classifieds - obviously don't expect much, but feels so wrong to give over £2k's worth (before the engine depreciation!) to a scrappy and be grateful he didn't charge me for making himself best part of a grand on the bits

the 235 engine was always problematic

however the b234 engine is a straight fit and really plentifull (all these 9000's)
and lasts forever

If you do not fancy doing it

I am looking for a nice auto for my wife....

Aw, I love you guys (blimey is that really 4 empty wine bottles in the bin?!)- PH is such a nice community - thanks for all your suggestions/contacts.

I'll follow up the leads, but suspect that anyone fixing the SAAB is going to give me a bill bigger than the car, even at PH mates rates!

Ylee, unless I find a miracle, I'm sure we can sort something - better still I'll email you tomorrow when I'm shober!

Ooh, while I'm at it, have sourced a nice 95 Aero from nearby SAAB garage - more money, but 12 month warranty seems sensible at this point with hindsight!

It's a 99/00 2.3T auto with 78k on the clock. Not had a 'HOT' one before - any pointers/worries (especially given the B235 comment above)?

They are quick!! Overtaking is effortless

Dad used to have 9-5's.

Rear suspension is known to fail at that sort of mileage apart from that the only problem he had (and you may well have experienced them) is that the displays for the CD player/heater controls used to play up. (The displays are like digital watches and made up of -|-| lines. Sometimes some of these -| parts fail).

Dad had the 2.3t with the LPT (185bhp), I think the 2.3T HOT is 250bhp! IIRC between 50 - 70 that model will out accelerate a Porsche 911.

Handling isn't upto much around the twisty but for a relaxing motor way cruiser it was great. Also no one seems to take any notice of it.

Thanks Phil

I'd heard about the digital displays, but more of an annoyance than problem. I'll check out the rear suspension point - cheers.

Still, the whole reason for going to a SAAB garage (paying enough) is for the 12 month warranty and their 35 year reputation. The car must be 100% reliable for my wife's business, but also withstand swipes from artic lorries (she's already been hit twice!) This time if we have problems, I hope a good warranty saves us from binning the car!

My wife does mainly m'way cruising - she doesn't do twisties, but the Aero should be more fun for me when I've stolen it instead of taking the Tiv

I have a 2000 (X) 2.3 9-5 happily into 6 figures on the mileage front. I understand that some of these engines suffer sludging issues so the oil should really changed every 6 months or 12,000 miles whichever comes sooner. Saab have introduced an 8 year warranty to cover this for full dealer service history vehicles, but it seems to be a bit variable as to whether dealers know about it! visit the forums at www.saabscene.com for more details!

Regarding a warranty, at just under 5 years old and approx 102k miles I purcahsed a 3 year warranty from www.warrantyworks.co.uk which was unlimited mileage, max claim £1000, total claims vto the value of the vehicle, but no mileage restrictions, this seems to cover all major, electrical, mechanical, aircon and turbo, and for £600 seemed a good deal, especially as I reckon my odometer will be around 190k by the time the warranty expires.

Only a few things have gone wrong since I owned the car (6 months old 7k miles):-

1) SID Display around 78k miles
2) Battery Replaced at 105k miles
3) Exhaust Backbox at 99k miles
4) DI Cassette at 90k miles
5) Rear trailing arm bushes at 113k miles

A couple of the alarm sensors have gone AWOL but other than that the cars works as well as it did when we got it. Just returned 35mpg from a 720 mile two day trip from Wales to High Wycombe to Cornwall to Banbury and back to Mid-Wales

A recommended vehicle

the problem with the 235's is the pcv system...they tried loads of times to get it right and it was always marginal resulting in sludge build up and oil starvation of the BE eventually

If the aero has had all the updates then it should be ok (get the dealer to give you an 8 year waranty on the engine ....)

pcv system? BE? (sorry being bit thick - although I get it generally - just curious). SAAB said that as long as the car is regularly serviced properly (ie breather gauze cleaned out, and I suppose a flush) the issue should not appear. I plan to change the oil every 6k regardless in future, but cheers for warranty comment: I thought it was standard, but I'll ask for the paper.

p.s. did you get my mail?

Hi!

Bit late to this, everybody seems to have answered your questions!

New engine will obviously be pricey even at a specialist, although I would have thought there would be a lot of 2.3s around that could be used.

Ideally find somebody mechanically minded to take it off your hands (Ylee!)

If you have problems, as well as www.saabcentral.com, try www.saabscene.com and www.uksaabs.co.uk.

Enjoy the Aero

PS - BE = big ends, PCV is to do with the oil breather I think. Would recommend 6k oil changes on any turbo engine.

Cheers NCOT

I was hoping my mechanic would find a replacement engine fairly cheap if he could hear it running first (ie rear end shunt in a scrappy) but of course this is unlikely by tomorrow. The call of the Aero is strong (even though it's not for me!) and I've already emailed Ylee, but we shall see what tomorrow brings...

If the car is otherwise good, I wouldn't scrap it - the 2.3 LPT auto is a perfect cruiser

Have you seen this? : www.uksaabs.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4894

Seems Nev on uksaabs has had a very similar incident with his 9-5, might be worth contacting him and asking him for advice (mention me if you like, I don't know him but he may have seen me around, fliptopbin on the Saab forums)
