Hi BB , quite right about the tyres ,how can you test the ability of a 4x4 with road tyres off road ???? if the rangey had off road rubber it would have pulled its self out of the pit , MORONS

I use a LR Defender at work (off road alot) and the amount of times we used to get stuck in fields etc because Our Garage had Been tight and brought road tyres for them.
Have managed to re-educate them now and we now use a road/offroad tyre as a full off road one wouldnt last five minutes on the road and to be fair we do alot of road use aswell.

Wouldnt beleive the difference they make.

when i was doing GPS surveying for wessex water i whent out with one of the meter readers to find some water meters ,and he done some serious off roading in his land rover 90 , some of the places it whent were unbeliveable , what a tool

When they dug the pit deeper the rangie got stuck - fair do's as it was on road tyres but they went on to say that it was too tough and the other two never got the chance. I'd like to bet that the landcruiser would have had a good go at it even with road tyres on. Mind u, i'd have gotten it through with a bit more damage than just a poxy bib spoiler I tend to use momentum to get me thru mud - works every time

Second the Land Cruiser/Rangie sentiment, work mates based in the middle east have Land Cruisers and are forever towing Rangies out when waddie bashing .
Also, what is the 4x4 of choice for those that depend on them in the Australian outback for their life, it aint the BM or Rangie .

Absolutely; works colleague lives in a peat bog and in winter the Amazon is the daddy, end of story. Had a Rangey but not fit to mix it's drinks, etc.

The X5 is a lovely, big, car but frankly, watching it slaughter the other two round the cones - HELLO D1CK BRAINS! Christ; as you say, try it in the sands of Arabia. 7-up, the Landcruiser IS amazing and does dune crested surging things that are seemingly physics defying.

The critics - and Drivel showed there are many - comnpletely miss the point about these cars and confuse their contempt for the generally unnecessary UK ownership experience with the real distinctive competence of these vehicles.

Anyway, with the proliferation of anti-vehicular road based hazards currently masquerading as saftey measures, I'm not so sure humongous 4x4 military style conveyance IS that irrelevant anyway!
