I picked this up from a website which organises UK schooling for overseas schoolchildren -

Interesting how our perceptions (political ones aside) can be distorted.

The United Kingdom combines the great traditions of max power and car jacking with vibrant popular street crime to create an environment full of bigotry, racism and post-modern jealousy. An woeful transport system and long tailbacks combine to ensure that you will always be within easy reach of both great roadrage and beautiful car wrecks
I could quite easily find an excellent job in many other countries, but would have a very very hard time ever leaving England permanently. I love it here. I love the food, the history, the TV, the cars, and even the weather.
It gets me down a bit that I live in one of the worst parts (London), but certainly not enough that I'd swap it.
I find it strange that so many people seem to hate it here. This is a serious point, why do those who dislike it so much not try somewhere else? If I decided England wasn't for me, I'd be off like a shot.

I thought once I didn't like this country or being British (or English) but I travelled for four years and realised the UK is a superb place, with wonderful countryside, history round every corner (apart from Milton Keynes) and not forgetting the very funny and extremely intelligent, witty, British sarcasm!
I am proud to be British and I am proud of Britain, who cares if it has shit weather. We wouldn't appreciate going to a hotter climate on holiday otherwise, and hot countries are not all they are cracked up to be. One gets rather peeved at 9/10 months of blue sky every single bloody day!
I also like the Queen, yorkshire pudding, Elgar, and the fact that we alone, in living memory, stood up in the face of fascism when the rest of the world either succumbed or pretended not to notice it.
I'm proud to be a part of our civilization. I'd hope that someone liek MadCop is also pleased to have people like me here. Having the odd disagreement with authority does not remove ones rights as a citizen, and, since my family has been making its modest way as Englishmen for at least five hundred years (and we assume from long before that), I can quite happily tell anyone to **** off who wants to infringe my rights as a citizen of this green and pleasant land, this sceptered isle, this England.
England belongs neither to the police, nor to the courts, nor to the readers of the mail, any more than it belongs to me alone. I will certainly listen to the opinion of others, but I will never, ever let them tell me to leave. Death before dishonour, and better a life as a serf in England than a King anywhere else.
Now, I'm off to drive my English sports car like a twat.

Actually everyone is mssing one of the most important aspects of the UK. I, just recently, had a comment that I made published in a weekly periodical here in the USA called Autoweek. They were asking about Supercar preferences... I responded with...
Actually, the British are the undisputed masters of small volume Supercar manufacture, so I would have to go with a british car.

talk about rose tinted glasses, your romantic notions seem to be a little back dated Northernboy, England was a fine and proud country, Elgar used to practice in my Grandfathers house (apparently) and the best place to be in the world was 'England in the Summer' I don't think it's the same now though. People have changed, there's petty jealousy and small mindedness everywhere, kids have nothing to aspire to other than to make a quick killing on reality TV or become a Pop singer, morality has changed too, 'I'm alright Jack being the order of the day. Architecture and Town planning is doing it's best to make every city identical to the next. Political correctness has all but obliterated our National Heritage and Pride, as an example, Fullers were not allowed to advertise 'Spitfire' beer on the Underground for fear of upsetting our German tourists. BTW where in hells name do you find good food? expensive restaurants excepted, would you go into town on a Friday night? I wouldn't the Nesbitts have taken the place over. I won't bother with the rules and regulations that we seem content to be fettered with either, can you imagine a Frenchman paying heed to where a Supermarket deems he has the right to park. I am intending to f**k off all right, just as soon as my kids have found there way 'Oh this England, this green and pleasant Isle' Arsebiscuits!!

Apache, I agree with what you say, but I did mention, paraphrasing my original post " current political perceptions" should be excepted. I'm thinking of a broader view of England, the English and the wider community that is the UK.
The political scene is too ephemeral, and hopefully non-influential, to the state of this nation and it's core values.

Sorry, maybe I'm being a bit thick here, but are we talking about the problems with England in particular, or the UK in general? I thought the thread was about the UK?
Not a criticism, I'm just curious!
