Don't worry, nothing taken and no car in there anyway. We think they were disturbed, problem is door is now hanging off and lock is smashed.

We have taken most of the valuables inside as we feel they might be back.

Question is...how legal is leaving various pieces of glass around the area where they jumped over the wall, just in case they do decide to come back?

Would we be liable should an unfortunate incident happen and someone where to unfortunately put their leg through said glass or get cut? (heaven forbid!)

Advice please

Im no legal expert but I'm pretty sure that the sad and stupid thing is that yes, you could be in grief if its obious you put the stuff there to inflict harm on an intruder.
If it was just a messy garage on the other hand with ya glass all over the place, it would be very dificult to prove you ment any harm

Edited dew two a customary bad case of spelin' ineptnes

So long as you put up big signs saying that you accept no responsability for any injuries of any nature sustained whilse on the premises, you should be ok.

Mannginger - you cannot legally do what you are suggesting. Which makes me

Same thing goes for razor wire.

I experienced something very similar a few years ago and the solution involved getting planning permission to increase a wall's height that would subsequently allow the placement of some apparently acceptable but evil looking and presumably infinitely more lethal rotating steel spikes thereupon.

This is, of course ridiculous and you need to be vaguely deranged to stay calm in the face of the authorities' general 'tough sh1te' stance in the face of such blatent, aggressive acts of criminal provocation.

Just fit the best door you can with the best locks feasible and alarm the bastard to oblivion.

I could weep, I really could. Good luck, whatever.

:sigh: Thanks everyone.

"Had" we placed such pieces of glass we might be thinking about taking them up again now.

But we are good and honest citizens who enjoy being shaf8ed by scum and the laws that protect them, so we obviously wouldn't have ever placed such potentially scum damaging articles in strategic places.

Guess will just have to lean on the landlord to get some decent security put on the garage instead.

When will the innocent ever get justice in this country???

Depressed and angry!

Mannginger be very very careful.
These bastards will most likely come back.
They usually do. Get a black/white cctv cam and longplay video recorder, and catch em in the act.
I would suggest using an infra red source to provide sufficient illumination under night conditions.
All the best.

I cant quote you on the legality but could you not plant some thorny bushes under the wall. This would act as a deterant. My freind has them all over his back fence. Mind you he also has carpet gripper on the top of his back gate.

Sorry such signs have no legal meaning and would be a complete waste of time.

Bad news sorry to hear it - The present culture does seem to encourage the b*stards doesn't it? - "if you make me hurt myself robbing you of your hard earned I'll sue you!"

1 thing I did hear from a builder is that if the wall > 6ft then you can put what you want on it - I also know a persoanl injuries lawyer who wouldn't say yes or no to the idea.... I suggest you look into it first, however you could do what we did and get a ghost
! (no ghost smiley)

Not the previous owner - but the one before that couldn't cope with life anymore and committed suicide in the garage, our garage has been broken into on 3 occasions - once by cutting the padlock and opening the door, one through the window and the other just pulled the door of its hinges - in each case nothing (power tools, karcher, car etc etc) was taken or broken - I reckon the old girl is looking after us by scaring them to death when they try.

she's never appeared to me so I guess I must be in her good books !

(I know that doesn't really help, but heck got to tell the story)

It will cause you a problem legally to put glass up there however, and this is a longer term option, it is not illegal to grow a very nasty sharp prickly thorny bush around the area in which they might climb down.

You would be surprised how effective it is. Mate of mine grew some kind of thorn bush round a common wall jumping area of his garden, never got his shed broken into again. Damned thing would cut you to ribbons!

Suppose they could attempt to sue the plant...

Try Berberis - particularly nasty needle type thorns

Screw Fix sell some brown plastic spikey things specifically designed to be "screw fixed" along the tops of walls to stop people climbing over. They are basically tough enough to prevent them climbing on them without causeing serious physical damage. They could of course just throw a coat over your glass/spikes whatever. Personally I believe the best deterent is physical security on a garage, i.e bars on windows and those sunk in posts that block the doors being opened.

My folks were advised (after a recent break in) by BiB to attach carpet gripper on the top rear edge of the garden gate. Not sure if this makes it legal, though...

at least if he hurts himself and wants to sue, surely it's an admission of guilt?!?

You would have the somewhat grim satisfaction of nailing the bastard.

Pyracanthis (sp?) is another one, evergreen like Berberis, bloody thing has needle spikes up to 3" long and is a bugger/dangerous to trim .

Far as I know you would be in trouble if some scrote hurt themself on your glass. You are liable for the welfare of all persons on your property even if they are committing an offence (How bad does the law suck!!). A sign would be no good at all I'm afraid, you cannot deny liability for Personal Injury under any circumstances. I think the thorny plant option would be best.

sorry fellas. anything that could cause injury and could be described as deliberate will result in action against you - twisted though it is.

the bush idea looks good, but presumably will take time, or you could try ' burglar paint ', which is very thick, tarish, paint which never dries out.

we put some on the roof of a toilet block on a local scout campsite years ago - it took weeks to get the damn stuff off my hands!

this all goes back to the ' mantrap ' laws introduced in the 1800s (?) to stop land owners setting up shot-guns on trip wires to kill poachers. but that reminds me - alarm mines. these are trip wires with shotgun cartriges on the end. makes a VERY BIG BANG

again to say - don't put up warning signs - this counts as an acknowledgement that you have installed something nasty. ' beware of the dog signs ' are an old favorite, but are an admission that your dog is dangerous, which could lead ( no pun intended ) to you being prosecuted.

it's a funny old world.
