Yes, "Wheel Wax". This stuff is new to me, too.
It (apparently) comes in a tub, looking abit like those expensive Carnuba(SP?) waxes sold for paintwork, except you put it on your wheels. Claimed to shine like [insert-amusing-analogy], and reduces buildup of brake dust and other dirt. I don't think it's from a well-known firm, and was being marketed by a classic car parts retailer.
Now i quite like a keen car, but I've never bothered with any exotic cleaning methods. However, I _AM_ interested in anything that may save effort in the long run. Which this might, by the sound of it.

that just using a wax polish normally used for paintwork will work well on alloys. It stops brake dust build up and makes it easier to wash the dust off.
I can see the sense in that. However, it seems that it would be blimmin difficult to apply (unless you have REALLY boring alloy wheels). Maybe you just slosh it on and don't worry about buffing it up? Could make sense for winter, I guess..

It's for clear coat painted wheels (most original equipment stuff). It actually adds a wax effect to the wheels so that you can literally just "spray off" any built up brake dust. I imagine using a wax coating on other types of wheels would have a similar effect...

I use vaseline...
no really...
not the liquid kind, you can buy from chemist's small tubs of almost solid/waxy vaseline.
make sure wheels are nice and clean. Smear the vaseline on, rub it in and buff to a shine, beauty part, is you just rinse dirt off, and it wont harm your alloys.
Porsche recommend vaseline in the handbooks
