Hey folks,
Just wondered if anybody could give me any advice!
Just about to move to Dublin, however I've been having some bloody ridiculous insurance quotes 1800+ euro.
Now I'm 28 had my licence 11 yrs but only 2 yrs NCB - car is a 1.6 Focus.
Does this sound far too much?, do I just have to go with it - any thoughts?

May be worth selling the Focus and getting an older "Sports Car" IIRC the insurance in Eire is way less for anything over ten yrs old, the tax is less too. Probably not an option if the car is for work but may save you a lot.

Believe it or not €1800 is a reasonably fair quote for a 1.6 in Dublin with a 2y NCB. My wife pays €950 on a 1.2 Fiat with a 7y NCB and our company car fleet is at €2000 per car.

To sum up insurance in Ireland is a total rip off but goes hand in hand with a worse claims culture than the UK and an inefficient court system.

My only sugestion is to phone around as much as possible, AXA Direct or the AA seem to be the best price wise at the momment.

Cheers Andy, the quote was actually with Axa, it was to be 2100 euro until I had my wife put on the policy as a named driver (she's had a licence for 3 mths) - how Irish is that??!!!

Hi Jim

Sounds totaly normal for this fecking place, I moved here in April 01 and am still getting used to the place and it's ways. Will you be in Dublin?

Edited to say I am a bit dumb just read your 1st post again. So change the question to, where in Dublin are you moving to?

Moving to Blanchardstown, where are you?
I also need to know about re-registering the car etc.
Also, is it true that if I did buy a new car in the UK, if I took it over to Ireland I'd be stung for 28% import tax? I'm thinking of getting something with a slightly smaller engine.
I've had the focus over a year.

Hi Jim

We live in Kildare Town and I work in Kill. Vehicle registration tax is 25% of the Market Value, payable on 1st registration. Might be better to sell in the UK and buy in Ireland, but check first. For more detail on tax goto www.revenue.ie
