Engine Explosion Pics
Discussion
Just saw this these pics of a tractor pulling engine letting go in the biggest possible way - http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=126961. Spectacular to say the least - particularly on a diesel.
Thats really quite a phenomenal explosion.
Look carefully and youll see its left the camshaft in the lower part of the block, shearing off the entire upper part of the crankcase and taking the whole head with all its ancilliaries with it.
God knows how much force it took to move such a huge block!
You really start to appreciate just what kind of forces are at play inside an engine when you stuff like that.
One thing is for sure, a light hone wont fix it this time.

It looks like a wet linered block which used to be dry linered as the liners don't look captive around the base. They look like wet liner inserts similar to Dartons but without the seals. So, the blocks just broken around the sides because it wasn't strong enough for boost and inserts. He was probably running a huge amount of boost to. Do you think it made a loud bang

Very common for a big Diesel.

Is it, I've never seen that before. Does that mean the liners were inserts as stock or something like that?

If you've never seen any Tractor pulling, I suggest you go to one. It's the slowest, shortest, most powerfull motorsport. And a fantastic spectical. Take some ear plugs. John
Never been to one, but have often watched it on television. It's amazing what a bunch of us rednecks can do with farm implements...
