Thats it - 3 years is up today!!

3 points gone from me licence and no camera flashes in the last three weeks and even better is I drop another 3 points on Thursday!

The catch is that although they are legally gone for "totting-up" purposes it takes another 12 months before you can have them removed from your licence, and... it'll cost you because you are compelled to have a photo-id licence and they charge £25 (or something) to issue this! Rich...

Yeah god damn it and they charged me £17 for a change of address becuase I can't find the stupid paper counterpart.

Not worried if they're on me license anyway, can just get me insurance down to a reasonable level now, and moving home soon, so should get a new license gratis anyway ......

miniman - the paper part is necessary because the DVLA has only just caught up with the modern technology that is plastic photocards. Now, data strips (or whatever the proper term is) on cards are simply beyond their ken.

Also every policeman would have to be issued with a card reader to read the mag strip.

Mag strips/chips can also be changed with the right technology therefore would be open to abuse.

Also, when you drive on the Continent with your Eurolicence, the car hire companies can't read your chip so you need a paper counterpart to show your convictions..which in my case is none

If you've got an old paper licence, don't send it off but instead apply for a photo licence thro' the post office.

I sent off my paper licence when I moved, and got a reply saying I'd have to complete the form for a photo licence. But as I'd "surrendered my licence" they weren't sending it back, and it could take several weeks for the photo licence to be issued - and for that time I was officially without a licence which "might cause difficulties if you are asked to produce your licence by the police".

So what's the point of the plastic ID card thing? Or have I just answered my own question?

My points are nearly all off too. But I'm hanging on to my paper one:
1 I think the plastic one has a sinister purpose.
2 I'll still need a paper one.
3 The insurance co's don't ask to see it, and they still want details of convictions in the last four or five years.
4 My paper one has character - and character goes a long way.

I leave mine in the desk drawer. If a Polizei wants to see it he'll have to give me a producer.
