Am I alone in thinking that most modern cars brake lights, indicators are far more powerful than they need to be at night? I can understand why they're bl##dy bright, so as to be visible on hot sunny day scenarios.
However on my old Spitfire and my Mini they both had 'night dimmers' which was a dropping circuit to reduce the voltage on the rear lights when the headlamps were turned on. Isn't this done anymore?
I guess as most numpties tend to sit higher (so higher eye-line) than me in my wedge it isn't an issue.

I was thinking of posting something similar myself. I was sitting at traffic lights at night behind a new 7 series BMW. He was sitting with his brakes on and they were bloody bright! I actually wished he would come off them cos they were dazzling me.
On a tangent, I hate when people dont put their bloody lights on when the sun is setting and you cant see the cars ahead.

You know, I've often thought that a sensible addition to cars would be pressure responsive brake lights. I recon a fair number of motorway accidents would be avoided if you could tell the difference between a touch on the brakes and a slam on.
A dab would make the lights glow, and they would get brighter the more pressure you applied.
You know, I've had this thought ever since I was in a car seat and have never mentioned it until now.

Sounds like a good one to me, but what if you have stop/tail type rear lights/
If the tailights were on,then if you were just feathering the brake, the brake lights wouldnt be bright enough to be seen over the tails...maybe thats why its not done?

This probably reflects the fashion for using clusters of LEDs instead of conventional bulbs. If you're looking straight at them (as is the case if you're behind the new Range Rover) they are 'kin bright. You can't really get even by fitting Afterburners to your Tiv as you'd just end up illuminating their sump guard.
Reminds me of one of my all time fave jokes though:

i was being followed by a brand new range rover the other night. then when he turned off into a side road i regained my vision. as if xenons aren't bad enough on normal cars with 4x4s they are bloody stupid. i dont see why people need such bright lights anyway...

I've had the same thought. I beieve fat cat BMWs have such a system. Both tail lights always come on, but the LED bar lights up progressivly.
Helps if you are warned that it's not a "I'm a bit close to the car in front" dab, but a "Shit, a UFO is in the fast lane" ABS assisted panic stop.....
Good idea really.
