As seen in the back of a gold-badged Lexus/Merc 190/etc near you...

Anyone know what exactly they're for?

Is it some kind of status symbol?? (I ran past an s-class with *two* identical boxes of kleenex on the parcel shelf this morning, and I've seen ornamental tissue box holders before as well...)

often wondered that myself... perhaps they're all a bit "Mungo" and need tissues to wipe the seats?

You see loads of them in the backs of Nissans around here. My theory is that they contain the ashes of Great Aunt Maud, and they're carried on the rear parcel shelf so that the said Great Aunt Maud can watch over the occupants of the vehicle as they proceed at 40 in a 30 with their foglights on.

Edited to add: Podie, you're a corrupting influence you are. I'd never thought of that!!

In the case of a sudden stoppage, one has plenty of cleaning materials flying through the air, just past the driver's left ear, such that they can be reached and put to immediate use.

Either that or they're untidy gits...........

Mr Big always has a box of tissues in the car so he can blow his nose. Problem is he does this when he is driving (ever tried blowing your nose with one hand?)and steers the car with his knees.

Good spot. I recon they must be nailed to the parcel shelf too, because they're always in the middle of the back window. If I put anything on my parcel shelf it slides around causing enough irritation for me to pull over and move it.

Hang on, what?! I didn't realise there was any other way to blow one's nose! Is it a size thing?

Now I know you haven't got a great big hooter Big_M, so perhaps that's where Mr Big really gets his name? Do tell.

The kind of people who put tissues on the parcel shelf will NEVER generate enough G forces to make them slide one inch.

I thought it was a religious thing.

I think its generally something to do with the Sikh religion as generally speaking most of these tissue holders that I have seen have the sign on the side of them (sorry dont know the proper name) that looks like a just incomplete circle.

Matt.

I think Plotloss is right - certainly, predominantly I've seen these guilted tissue receptacles in Mercs belonging to Sikhs..

Maybe that's the sacred symbol of a particular caste though - perhaps a different caste would have something else ... guilted nodding dog for example..

That said, an old mate of mine from the Jat caste (I think that's how it goes) never had a tissue box or nodding dog in the back of his Cerbera 4.5 LW.

You might know the car.. it's hardly used now it's current owner has got himself an RS2

That's the Überwagen to you, Mr Zee.

Cerbera still gets plenty of use. Ironically its the RS2 that is on a limited mileage policy.

Anyway, isn't it predominantly Datsun Primulas that carry the worlds decorated tissue boxes and ornate cushions?

Well quite. And everytime I take it in for a service and they valet the car, they put the damned things back in. Everytime, I take them out and trade them for a lovely ruby

the other week I saw a tissue box in a kind of velvet cover, with tasled edges, it was on a tartan blanket which was over the rear shelf . . . .classy . . .I thought about 'tartan blanketing' the rear of the Vixen actually, I could get at least 4 boxes of man sized tissues in the back between the roll bar mountings

it might upstage the local vicar in the tissue stakes, but boy would it look the nuts!

Bonce mate - I have been trying all afternoon and no way can I blow my nose with just one hand - two nostrils = two hands.

The box of tissues in the car came in very handy last night when we were taking our cat to the vet to have his stitches out (lump removed - benign thankfully). Casper, bless 'im, decided to do a dump in his cat carrier..... so there I was in the dark trying to remove the items with a tissue. Mr Big was waiting outside the car - good job I have no sense of smell.

Isn't the tissue box part of the kit you are issued with when you go to the post office to collect your first pension payment?

You know, the one with a tartan rug, flat cap, electronic "45mph enforcer" and so forth...
