Those EVOs are bloody quick aren't they?

Got absolutely trounced by one last night in my [engage smug mode] new Griff [disengage smug mode - actually, no lets keep it engaged for a while]. I was there grappling for the third to fourth gear change when I think I hit the rev limiter, the car kangarooed a bit, I lost a fair bit of steam and he shot past carrying three people! Doh!! All within legal speed limits of course (Germany's)
. Oh well, practice makes perfect I guess - mine looks better anyway....

That rev limiter thingy - you really don't want to hit it too often, or your local Rover V8 engine rebuilder is gonna get on first name terms with you
Hi Craig - thanks for this. I didn't know it could cause any damage. What happens? I only hit it accidentally unfortunately, and will definitely try and avoid it again.
Cheers!
Erm, not wanting to throw the cat among the pigeons here but that little rev limiter thingy. Isn't that supposed to stop the engine revving too high so you DON'T damage the engine.
As far as I am aware hitting the limiter doesn't matter too much as no damage is done, otherwise it would be pointless having one, but an owner or someone Like Steve Heath could probably tell you more concisely (is that a word?)

I do belive the point was reving the big v8 to the point the limiter cuts in without any load on the engine IS A BAD THING! Work it out for yourself, or go out to your motor, warm it up then floor the throttle till it wont rev no more! I think youll find it screams for mercy some point above the redline because the limiters dont offten work faster enough if the engine is'nt under load. Hope that clears it up for you people scratching your heads, (read as numptys)

That's a little harsh.
1. often
2. fast enough
3. isn't
4. numpties
I have a very basic understanding of these things, but:
The rev limiter works on an electrical signal, based on how often the plugs are sparking. Hence it works at the speed of light. It cuts the power to the plugs, so the engine cannot accelerate any more.
The limiter would be set lower if the limit caused serious damage to the engine.
Sure, though, holding the engine on the limit wears it out quickly and just goes against any mechanical sympathy I have.
All that said, there's no need to rev the tits off a V8.
Prince. Sorry to hear you got wasted. Maybe next time...
