In a Peugeot 306 GTI-6, 22,000miles. When starting from cold, its very hard to select any gear, until the engine warms up.

Peugeot say the gearbox had the wrong oil, and was low on oil, which they say they have rectified. However the problem remains, and can only really replicate the problem first thing in the morning.

Any ideas what else may be the problem, or any solutions we can try would be much appreciated.

Any more info? Is the mechanism baulking before engaging or will it select the gear but it graunches as it selects?

As Hut said, are there any other problems?
This is the 6 speed box on this car, and theyve had enough problems with just the normal 5 speeders.
Is the gearbox linkage correctly fitted, not fouling anything etc?
From what i remember of these, theres NO adjustment possible of the linkage, so unless its bent someplace, the fault if it has one, will be in the box, or in the clutch.
Peugeot usually specify Shell Helix Synthetic gear oil in these, so if its had something else, its possible theres damage internally.
Is it under warranty still?
You may be able to press them for a new gearbox if so.
Hope this helps.

Have a look at engine mountings. A 205 GTI was cured of this problem when the engine mounts were changed for MOT. Changed of oil and clutch had only helped a bit, and I was going mad! When you release the clutch in neutral, do you hear the box engage loudly (whirring)? This could be a worn bearing on the imput shaft. BTW a gear box should not be low on oil after 22 000 miles, so check for leaks and for greasiness around where the half-shafts (drive shafts) come out of the box.

my 307 is like that, at 14800 miles. Think it is just the cold making the oil thicker.

Same thing on my 944 box, which is pretty common I believe. A lot of people recommend Red Line synthetic gearbox oil which is supposed to help.

Hmmmm

I have exactly the opposite problem in the skoda. When its cold it shifts just fine but once its properly warmed up it get quite stiff. Its harder to pull it out of one gear and select the next gear.

Any ideas on what this might be caused by.
