I went to see some a friend on Saturday and was told a "humourous" driving story by her mother while there that is bound to have people in stitches:
She received a call to pick her youngest daughter up from the local station one evening (this is all very recent btw) but halfway there found the road totally blocked as the result of an accident. At the time she was on a bridge so there was no way to turn around so was left with no choice but to sit and wait it out. After a while her daughter phoned again in a typically foul mood demanding where her lift had gotten to - one short session of light verbal abuse later she ended the call and, now in something of a bad mood, sat back to wait for the accident to finally be cleared.
Shortly afterward the traffic started to move again and she set off at best speed (read - driving like a bit of a loony in her little nissan micra automatic). Within minutes she came to a junction and rather than wait for the lights (just changing to red as she arrived) she carried on (this isn't London btw so this is fairly abnormal behaviour). What she didn't notice was the squad car directly behind her....
The lights came on and she (and the car in front) duly pull over to the side to let it past - except that it didn't. A quick toot of the horn to the car in front and both cars set off again. The police were obviously unimpressed by this and ended up pulling around in front and blocking her path.
The copper in the passenger side gets out and politely asks her to drive around the corner away from the main road. Our star is still oblivous to the fact she ran a red light and somewhat distracted and as a result (while trying to navigate around the squad car) reversed straight into the car behind!
The copper was dumbfounded but quickly got on top of the situation - checking out the damage (of which there was none thankfully). He firmly told her to "follow the police car slowly around the corner", while the onlookers were all still pissing themselves laughing. Apparently even the driver of the car she hit was having trouble keeping a straight face - but it doesn't end there.
Once she has pulled up around the corner she is asked for her documents. The MOT and insurance certificates are duly produced and checked but when she hands over her license there is stunned silence. Her license is getting on a bit and rather the worse for being stuck in the bottom of her purse for many years. "Madam - this does not constitute a driving license" says the copper and proceeds to lift the scrap of green paper up by one corner - whereupon the bottom half gently flutters to the floor. If the onlookers hadn't wet themselves by this point they lost all control while the copper started to chew her out a bit for not looking after such an important document.
To be fair the attending police officers were actually very kind to her (and didn't fine her for having the wrong address on her license - despite the fact the address was a good 6 years out of date) and she got away with a standard fixed penalty
