XP outlook attachments "oh no you cant"

can anyone help? Ive got XP and an attachment in outlook. it says I cant open it as its unsecure.

HOw the hell do I turn it off? Ive checked every option available.

Win 2000 does this too - you have to right-click and Save As... instead of opening it direct.

Pisses me right off!

Microsoft have removed the 'attachment security' options from Outlook as part of a critical update. This 'fixes' the 'security issue' by ensuring that everybody has to save infected files to their disk and let their virus checker deal with them

It used to be that you could choose to open or save.

You can turn this option off in Outlook.
Go to Tools - Options - Security, and uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"

From Outlook XP help:

"By default, Microsoft Outlook blocks attachment files ( such as .bat, .exe, .vbs, and .js) that can contain viruses. You cannot see or access the attachments. Your Inbox will display the paperclip icon in the Attachment column to let you know that the message has an attachment, and you will see a list of the blocked attachment files in the InfoBar at the top of your message. If you try to open the attachment by right-clicking the item, View Attachments will not appear on the shortcut menu. If you need to use files, such as .exe files, from others, have them post the files to a network share or to a Web share that you can access. "

Used to be in Outlook also, but was removed by a critical update/service pack as far as I remember.

Outlook->Tools->Options->Security->Attachment Security.
This button was removed.

yup, thats the best way -a bit heath robinson - but it allows us to send our kylie.mpg oops word documents easily...

actually ive sussed a cheat. go to forward the message, and then you can get at the attachement...

Podie is right about using zip formats. I tell all my students that they must send in zip format. The other advantages are a) it saves time as the file is smaller b) you can virus check prior to it being unzipped (well with my virus checker you can)

Opening any executable file direct is a really bad idea.
