Having heard people recommend Coldplay I downloaded a bunch of tracks at random (but popular ones because they were availble from a number of sources). I then transferred them to my DAP jukebox and listened to them out in my workshop. Found the majority of them to be downbeat in terms of both tempo and lyrical content, and the singer sounded as if he could hardly be bothered. Am I alone in wanting my singers to at least sound as if they are making an effort?

Don't know why you would think that, Simon. Only other shared topic AFAIK is the NHS thing, and I agree with you about the wheelchair
Anyway, to say a bit more about music. I have quite wide range in my music collection, have even started checking out stuff from before my time (and that is a long time ago) such as Sinatra etc, and I also have an occassional listen to modern stuff. I try to avoid machine-made music. My main requirements are- good melody and the audible expenditure of emotional energy. Sometime ago I heard the Coldplay version of You Only Live Twice, one of the best songs ever written. Travesty? Massacre? Can't think of the right word to describe a vocal performance so lacking in effort that the singer obviously thought he was doing enough just to remember the words (not quite achieved).

I think this came up before; Ted wanted to keep it a motoring-focused forum, and General Gassing can cover O/T stuff - if it diverges into music, then why not sport, and telly, and... and bang goes the main focus of the site.

As for the musical delights served up by Cold Play, I find myself reaching for the radio's off switch whenever they are announced. Personally I have been listening to some albums from my teens, bands I'd all but forgotten like "the Nick Straker Band" and some old faves such as "Nick Lowe" and "Joe Jackson". I'd wager that these bands meet your criteria of a good melody and audible expenditure of emotional energy.
Regarding the wheel chair thing,I was a little suprised that I wasn't shot down in flames for my comments, as although I stand by every word, I thought it wouldn't be exactly popular. Just goes to show what a diverse population PH has. Merry Christmas. Simon.
Cant listen to any cds in the van now for about 2 weeks 
cos my bloody alpine has deciced to go doolally ive just sent the media staion/control part in for repair but the brain is still working so ive got radio 2 set at a present volume untill the media station/control part of the unit comes back
