I went shopping in the sales today 
and bought several items at a large store. When the girlie had finished totalling everything up on her till she said "That will be £20 please." Now one of the items I bought was £20 and the other two were £10 each - but I thought I may have done my maths wrong or misread the prices. Well I checked the receipt and there was only two items on the bill. Dilemma time. The security tags had been removed from all three items so there would have been no problem with walking out of the shop. But I just could not do it. I had to point out her error and pay for the omitted item.
What would you have done in this situation. Am I a prat?

.im afraid i would have had to walk away with the loot.does that make me a man of "low moral fibre".....perhaps,but if it was a wallet or something that id found i would return it,so i guess im not all bad .It must be something to do with taking from a faceless organistion(errr) that makes it right .(and no that doesnt mean im a shop lifter....they tend to use that one a lot )

Its happened to me a few times. So well done.
What does annoy me is when I point it out and the till operator grunts a thank you as if it was my fault..
Also that person who's cheque book and guarantee card I found in the same holder, the one I took to the police station, thanks for not thanking me.

Edited to say 10 to 17 is a 70% rise now thats "rocketing"

I am afraid that technically in law you would be just the same as a shoplifter if you had walked out without paying for goods you knew payment was required.
The actions that you would take are theft and possibly false accounting under the theft act.

Not that i am encouraging shoplifting.Wouldn't proof be a problem in this case as the items were in a sale and were duly presented for payment,would you know how much the bill should be for? some sales have price reduced at the till (saves time repricing)
Say the purchase was for 50 items i doubt anybody would have noticed

I walked out of M & s with a trolley full of shopping last week that I had not payed for
Mobile phone rang as I was wizzing round and I couldn't hear the caller properly, walked to the front of the store pushing the trolley and the signal was dire so I walked outside without thinking
I stood outside for about 5 mins talking on the phone and suddenly realised that I hadn't paid for the shopping
No one had noticed. split second decision do I walk off or go back and pay??? Yep I went back in and paid

Say you didn't pay for any of the items but knew you had to! It may be difficult to prove but it does not mean it is not theft.
The only way that it would not be theft is that if you had 50 items and you were unaware that some of them had not been charged for.
As soon as you become aware of that fact, you assume the rights of the owner ('the store') and if you intend to then permanently deprive the owner of those goods without going back and offering payment, the offence is complete.
Proving shoplifting is difficult in many cases as the full definition of theft has to apply and there has to be a 'mens rea'(guilty mind) element to it.
As stated before just because the case may be hard to prove, does not mean that you do not commit it and does not mean that you may not get your collar felt if someone realises (cctv)
Theft is an arrestable offence. There is no time limit restriction on when you can be arrested for this offence and sometimes when evidence is difficult to come by or the person difficult to find, then the power of arrest can be activated years later.
Story
Several years ago, I stopped a pedestrian who was walking on the motorway trying to hitch a ride to Brighton. As with all pedestrians on Motorways I ran him through the PNC to see if he was known to Police. Not only was that the case but there was a wanted marker on him for an offence of GBH committed in Brighton 4 years earlier. He got his lift to Brighton, but not in the manner that he had expected. It was via another Police station and the custody procedure.
He had been out of the country for the time since the original offence and was not even aware that he was wanted for the offence.
I was always told, 'be sure your sins will find you out' I don't know about any of you lot but where I am concerned they have a habit of catching me up eventually
. the best thing to be is completely honest just as Big M has been and can no doubt sleep at night and walk without looking over her shoulder because of it
