Don't know if you guys have seen this train in China ?
The world's fastest passenger train made its first public appearance yesterday, accelerating smoothly to 267mph before jamming on the brakes so that it would not run out of track.The MagLev train sped past a few villages and above a network of new roads to reach the city airport at Pudong in eight easy minutes. The 19-mile journey takes 45 minutes by road, built at a cost of £750million. A one-way ticket will be priced at a hefty 50 yuan (£3.80).
The maglev, with a top speed of 311mph and a cruising speed of more than 248mph, will easily eclipse the bullet train (186mph) when it enters service.
How cool is that
Shame we have to pay more than £3.80 to STAND on crowded UK train, WHEN it turns up late 
Now why can't the UK have something like this. This would be the kind of incentive I would need to give up my car and take the train instead !

But £750 million for a train and 19 miles of track?
This isn't part of strategic investment in transport it's an investment in propaganda and distraction.
Sod the the millions of people in China that live in poverty let's blow a billion on a new train set for prime minister rongji. It's all politics and self-engrandisement. Don't mistake it for anything else.
As soon as the project is finished the Chinese will rip off the technology and build copies at a fraction of the cost.
If Europe wasn't so full of bureaucratic crap projects like this would be commissioned in Europe not China. In fact the Maglev project was due to be built between Berlin and Hamburg but got scrapped by environmental numpties.

Lets face it guys if such a route was given the go ahead here in the UK it'd probably have ended up costing not £750 Million but closer to £7 Billion. The project would no doubt be delivered 15 Years late by the 4 million fat-cat managers overseeing it. The workers would go on strike a few times demanding more money for less work and train itself would probably malfunction on its first journey relieving a few hundred passengers of their lives !
As a nation of people we may have certain qualities but I dont think efficiency in the workplace is one of them. For example, money is currently been invested at my local train station to fix the roofing and gutterring on the platforms. There've been 15 workmen with an arsenal of heavy machinery working on this project for THE PAST 6 MONTHS! Its only when you see them work with your own eyes that you realise where the billions of pounds of fares thats goes through the transport system goes.

I worked on the drive system software on the Eurostar (including 1 1/2 years testing it in France), 350kmh is the software limited vmax, many French TGV's can run at 300kmh. Smooth as silk at that speed.
When the Eurostar comes onto UK track it's down to 70-100mph, lurching from side to side, as he track is so sh*te. Just enother example of the BS that this country is turning into.

It is certainly the case that successive Governments have
avoided spending large amounts of taxpayers money
on track upgrades.
And the results of that policy are plain to see.
But what isn't plain to see is all the money that the
Government avoided spending, resulting in lower taxes
for all of us.
I often find it strange that folks want to re-run
the 1950s, where cars won out over railways.

I just happen to work in this lovely railway industry and must agree that it is a load of cr@p.I was employed by BR and now work for a construction company who have no idea about railway engineering. We now have less investment than we did in the 80's and since the privatisation in the 90's it has got worse. We unfortunately have never had the privilege to go out on strike.
I have just worked Xmas Eve and Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve and Day. Oh what we fun we have.
The only good thing about a cr@p railway, is less investment on it, so more is put onto the roads.

I am pretty sure that it only does 70 mph. The line is far to sh@te for it run any quicker. Never mind, the new rail link that should of been built in the first place may be ready soon. How long has the old hole to France been open?????
Why not take up all the railway tracks, and lay tarmac on these routes?
No need to go ripping up the countryside cos the base is already in place.
Et Voila! Loads more roadspace, trucks should be made to use these, gets rid of the "train" problem and releives the motorway.
And pavements arent part of these new road routes either, so the speed limit is unlimited.

hmmm well isn't it strange how we always assume it's not Brit's leading the world with technology eh?
Maglev & LIMs were 'invented/discovered' in the UK, and now one the the world leaders in this technology is thriving in the UK.
Just not shouted about so much, but believe me the right people know who to phone when they want serious maglev and lim (linear induction motors) designed and built...
Have u ever ridden a LimCat to see just how close to TVR they can get? They are currently in public knowledge as rollercoaster launch systmes - typically 0 to 70 in 3 seconds, but the train weighs 10-15 tonnes!
Still intend to put my Chim next to the test launcher in the spring to see which wins or 100 yards though....
