After sitting through the excellent if far-fetched Back to the Future last week, I have developed a hankering for one of these stainless steel steeds. I'm sure it's a fad which I'll get over, but my brother in law isn't helping. He keeps sending me classifieds for them, and I can bag one for about 7K. It'll only be a weekend car though. But that's okay

Thing is y'see, I like 'em. Despite the horror stories, there's a certain magic about them, aside from the fact that they look like a gullwing door adorned Russell Hobbs kettle, circa 1982. And despite the fact I won't be able to travel through time.

Does anybody have any advice ? Tips gratefully recieved....

Im suprised at the price, should be a real collectors item I would have thought. its the sort of thing you find in car museums.

its a renault engine, so servicing should be easy.
check for cocaine under the seats!

for 7k it will turn more heads than 99% of cars. If it just to be used at w'ends I would say go for it. Cant believe it will lose a great deal of money, other than through maintenance/servicing. I cant recall ever having seen one on the road and would certainly look twice, especially if there was a mad grey haired bloke with a lab coat on in the passenger seat.

Where do you get spares from or serviced? I've never driven one but have read they don't exactly drive like a sports car. If you're going go blow £7k get a cheap LHD 968CS as a trackday special. Kit it out with buckets, harnesses etc.

Some people will buy anything, but if you've any sense you'll save your 7k for something more worthy.

PS 5) they have a non-turbo (I'm pretty sure) Renault engine.

it might be worth giving paul matty the lotus place a ring they've had a few in over the years... last one was about 10k i think a few years ago...

and there was a lot of lotus work in the design...

for a weekend fun car who cares what it handles like it will be a laugh...

oh yes and i have seen one thats been painted....

mujst be unreal though cleaning your car with a brillo pad.....

You know the same happens to me everytime I see either of the Taxi films. Would'nt be hard to do either, white 406 big wing on the back and deep spoiler on the front, lowered over some straight spoke alloys. Not sure where to get a Taxi sign though.

Bearing in mind its novelty value, you may be able to advertise it in the wedding section of the local rag. Makes a nice change from tatty old rollers and tacky limos!!

Saw one for the first time at the NEC last year. Magnificent beasty. You may need to invest in the following though:

1. Newtons cradle
2. Leg warmers
3. Day-glo socks
4. Brick size mobile phone

All for the sake of authenticity of course!!
