So did I, but, looking back after more than 25 years of working, they were certainly the most carefree, if not the best, days of my life.

I disliked school, but loved University.
I actually much prefer working, I LOVE my job, much better than school any day and I can even surf PH all day.

You know, it always used to really irritate me when people said that to me.

Problem is, with hindsight at the grand old age of 23, they were right.

No worries about paying rent, relatively short "working" hours in an environment thats positively relaxed compared to some of the places Ive worked, lots of girls (and none of the issues that surround workplace relationships).

Of course there were some disadvantages as well, but not all that many.

Or is it just me looking back with rose coloured glasses?

Absolutely hated school, couldn't be bothered at all, espcially not with GCSE's, if I'd have revised I prolly would have got better results.

Can't really comment otherwise as I only left school last year.....still hated it.

Would that be anything to do with the fact there is a '24 hr drink your body weight in lager for 50p' contest in the union bar every day?

Viperman, school whilst you are there is absolutely trousers, also a very necessary evil. I don't think anyone likes it, but some look back with a degree of affection after a few years, me included. I even organised a 25th anniversary reunion last may. Nostalgia trip to die for. Highly enjoyable.

I spent waaaaay too much time at school caring if people liked me or not. Fortunately I'm over that now.

Wish I could go back to having so few demands on me though. I can remember saying 'when I grow up I'll be able to do whatever I want' (usually when Mum said 'no' to something). This proves nothing except that I was some asshole kid with no sense of irony.

I hated school....

With one or two notable exceptions, my peers were all utter shits, the teachers were all narrow-minded retards, the rules were stupid, the work mostly pointless.

the hours and holiday were good but the pay sucked..

I think the concensus must be that the best days were those of least responsibility - it's merely an unhappy coincidence that those were also the days we were at school (or for that matter supposed to be at school, but riding round Manchester on a bus trying to find someone to buy pot from)

Oh I almost forgot the how many meals can you make with a tin of beans contest too.

Glad I did the uni thing as a mature student. Not too mature to not enjoy it but not skint either. It still comes as a monster shock when a grant cheque to last a term equals a weeks pay.

School days best days of your life? Not even close.

Left 6th Form 13 years ago, and much prefer ‘working life’, to the point where I have 1 part time & 1 full time (both reasonably ‘good’) jobs. Also looking forward to growing up sometime in the future – but not quite yet

Cheers, Phil

I actually quite liked school. Lots of friends and enjoyed most of the lessons as well. Hey - I enjoyed learning OKAY .

But I think carzee is right. The best days of our lives are the most carefree ones. They happen to be whilst your at school age and you have no responsibilities, no fear for life and limb and very few cares in the world. You certainly don't worry too much about the future. What's going to be happening to you at 30 seems along way off.

When you get older and have mortgages, kids etc and HAVE to work to keep a decent standard of living. You also become much more aware of your own mortality. So things become less carefree and more stressful. You start worrying about what's going to be happening to you, and how you are going to have enough money to eat, when you are 60 or 70.

Okay there are some people that this doesn't apply to and have horrible childhoods and won't agree but for me that's how it was.

I also agree wih CZ about running around Manchester (well Stockport in my case) trying to score pot when you should have been at school - I know lots of people that did that (not me though ).

I came under number 3. and had friends in both over groups - Groups 1 and 2 never really mingled with each other.

Totally agree, sadly I fell into number 2 for the first couple of years and was bullied all the time, then I lost it one day and immediately snapped into group 3.

I also had mates in groups 1 and 2, people in group 1 wouldnt speak to me in school, but out of school it was a completely different story. Strange.

(except about 30 people!)

and yesi hate doin the pointless work, its about 90% pointless

School was crap.
Id rather stick a fork in my testicles than have gone there.
Full of "teachers" who couldnt teach, and obnoxious spotty little twats who, just cos they didnt want to learn, would pull the rest that did want to, down.
Best days of our lives? Pish.

No hated it - went to an all girls convent school manned by whiskery old nuns and other weirdos. Attended by some nice people whom I still call friends. I went to Uni as a mature student - now those were the best days of my life -so much so I now work there!!

Don't know what you lot do for a living but it seems 90% of my working life is pretty pointless

I couldn't wait to leave school I did not enjoy it at all, I felt bored most of time and remember wasting days on end doing pointless tasks.

I went to school on the odd occasion to catch up with work I had missed, this allowed me to still pass my exams.

With Mrs Fish here - Uni wins hands down. Even though you don't have that much cash when you're there, if you are prepared to borrow against future earnings , then you can have a fantastic time.

As always CZ is spot on. The most carefree days are the best. The mistake that a lot of people make, including myself, is that they rush into competitive jobs straight from University, which mean that all of a sudden, all of your time is accounted for. Long hours, needing the cash to pay for mortgage , cars etc.

I was lucky in that I managed to get around the world a bit through my university years. To all those youngsters out there however, make sure that you get the travel thing out of your system before starting down the path to 12 hour working days. The bank manager may take a bit of convincing, but it is well worth it!
