Tracing a car's numberplate (for a prezzie)

I was thinking that it'd be a nice touch if I could track down my parents first car (Morris Minor) and see if I could buy it/restore it for them as a wedding anniversary gift. (My sister would chip in the cost as well)

I'm sure it's probably lying in a scrapheap somewhere but where can I go to find the current/previous owner of it?

I have the registration number, dad still remembers it so that's a start.

Any help is much appriciated.

write to the dvla telling them that a morris minor colour xxxx and reg xxx has been abandoned on private land and you are trying to trace the owner to have it removed or bill them for removal..


that usually works.....


p.s. you might need a bit of private land somewhere if they ask you.... where

p.p.s thats probably illigal as the car isnt actually abandonded on private land, but up to you ...

This will probably take quite alot of sorting out as if the car needs some restoration I'll need to sort something out with space and I'll also need to be able to drive.

You can go to the post office and ask for a DVLA search enquiry form. If you fill out what you would like to know, then DVLA will tell you about who owns the registration mark and the car it is attached to.
There is a charge for this but it is not extortionate.
I cannot tell you what the charge is.

Cant remember where from but £25 smackers rings a bell.

Also you could try insuring it on-line as when you put the reg in the car details normally come up auto matically hence it might confirm its still about.

Is there a Morris Minor owners club?

Alternatively I think there is a business in Bath involved in rwestoring and supplying parts. I imagine they may know if the car was still running. (I think it's called "The Morris Minor Centre").

Thing is not only do l have to bribe him to make it worth his while, do l'll have to stump up a minimum of £250 for a basic DVLA replacement plate for his car yes?

Not sure you'd have to pay £250 for a new plate - don't the DVLA just issue you with a basic number (i.e. not personalised, just from the standard list of numbers) pretty cheap???

Guess this also happens when company car drivers with personal plates hand the car back?

You can find out if it is still registered in a car by using Tesco's online car insurance system. They ask you to put in the registration plate and if it is still in use it will give you the make/model of car it is registered on. (Well it could the last time I checked)

At least it's a start.

Saw one today in Chatteris while at work think the plate was GFL *** any help. Couldnt tell wether it was a 1000 or not??

Using the online insurance doesn't prove the car is still running - I once put in my dad's old car's reg plate (car was written off big time a few years ago) and it's details came up....
