Miles O/T - Dogs and Bikes.

Hi all..
The vet mentioned to me this morning that he was once told that "walking" a dog whilst on a bike (pushbike) is technically illegal. He couldn't quite remember why, he thought it might have been on a cruelty basis, however my guess would be something to do with the control of dogs act 1992.. anyone know anything about this as I (and the vet) tend to do this once in a while..
Cheers
Matt
PS this is not with the dog on a lead btw, just running beside the bike.

I used to go out with a girl who had a Lab/German Shep cross.. a right bloody thing it was..
It liked to chase cars.. and I like to drive fast.. and liked the dog to be knackered and stay out of the way, so we used to race up and down this stretch of road in my car with the dog tearing after us..
After 15 minutes or so of this the dog wouldn't bother us for the rest of the day..

I had some of this last summer , a guy coming down a side street with the dog running beside him , he turned right the dog judt went straight on across a main (but quiet at the time) road on which i was traveling on , end result was £600- damage to the Shaguar, it was a bueautiful evening roof down on the way to see a mate , driving at or below the limit roof down to my amazement out of the side window suddenly saw the dog coming straight at the door ,,,, bit messy but he was ok in the end
I too thought this was a great way of knackering the dog out with minimal physical effort, however after about three miles of the dog running flat out besides me and refusing to quit we got home and all seemed fine and dandy however the dog spent the next week limping about, feeling sorry for himself and needed a trip to the vets because he'd worn all his paw pads raw and blistered. Whoooops big guilt trip and feeling sorry for the dog, I'd knackered him alright but actually hurt the poor little sod in the process, be careful unless your hound is really used to this amount of exercise.
SGirl said: I don't know if it's illegal, but apparently it's very dangerous. I used to live in Sweden where this kind of doggy exercise is common, and falling off bike while in charge of hound is one of the most common reasons for broken bones and trips to A&E.
Just my 2p's worth...
the dog i hit was in Copenhagen and they are all at it there ,,, where did you live in Sweden Sgirl??
M@H said: hows that Work then SGirl.. I'm not on about being towed about by the doggy, just cycling beside (behind) it..

Matt.
Oh, right. No, the dog doesn't tow in Sweden either, but people do cycle round with them on leads. If your doggy is just following/leading (!) you and you're not attached to it by a lead, I don't see why it should be a problem. You're allowed to ride horses with dogs running along beside you as long as the dog is under control....

OK - I can give you a difinitive answer here.
A little known fact that I was the 5 time British Husky racing champ (yep the dogs not the bikes) and we used to train the dogs all the time in woodland areas, mostly pulling a quad. However it is illegal to have a dog pulling anything on the queens highways, and for that matter the payment (it's illegal to ride on the payment ! ) THe law dates backs centuries and is to do with cruelty etc
