Now not a great deal usually worries me, I may have a bit of a rant every now and again at the TV or over the dinner table, but it's usually from a stop moaning stand point,
But anyway recently the idea of getting old has been bugging me, and I don't mean the mungo styleee 'getting old' losing hair and stop fancying 17 year olds, I mean proper can't remember which day it is old.
Over the past month or two I've spent a lot more time than is healthy in hospitals and nursing homes, luckily just as a visiter but god these places are depressing
Racegranny has just been admited to a nursing home after suffering a massive stroke which has turned a previously active old lady into a physically and mentally handicapped empty shell, and because she was financially secure she's having to pay in the region of £400 a week for the priviege of having a bottle of glup injected into her stomach 4 times a day
Everyday we hear that any pensions we may be paying into will only pay us £2.50 a week in 30 years time, and we'll all live in fear of all the muggers that we can't defend ourselves against
So I imagine I'll snap out of this once the weather picks up, but am I alone on this and are there any PH pensioners out there to put my mind at rest
Oh and while I'm whinging 2 hours, 2 bloody hours, thats how long Domino's expected me to wait for a delivered pizza or 2 at 7.30 Friday night, 2 HOURS!, order went to local Pizza vendor delivered in less than 1/2 hour

Invest in self defence equipment instead of a pension. In 30 years they may well have invented something to fry any little scrote that comes within 10 feet of you.
OTOH maybe by then civilisation will have woken up to its problems and we will have cleared the scum out of the gene pool.
The dilema is do I scrimp and save during my working life to 'hopefully' have a decent quality of life after 65 or do I blow it all on the better things in life while I can enjoy it and reach 65 pennyless and let the state look after me?
In the aforementioned nursing home there are 'inmates' who only have to find £15 a week because they have no money and they get exactly the same level of care
Currently going for option b, and just shoot me when I'm 70
Oh and Domino's offers miffed me a little aswell we where going for the £9.99 large pizza with everything on it and garlic bread, which was on a flyer delivered to us with the heading olong the lines of 'heres a good offer for being a good customer' I then saw exactly the same offer on a TV advert which took away the 'feeling special' moment quite quickly

My local Indian (which is so nice, despite getting a very rough bout of dicky stomach from once, I still go there) gave me a bottle of wine for Christmas. I also get the calander from the local chinese every year(along with at least 2 hairs in the food, again I allow it because it tastes so nice)

Raceboy, can sympathise with your position ref. nursing home. My MIL has just been admitted and is charged about the same. This is really pissing me off. She and her hubby both worked for themselves and from 1982 have been retired and living on investments etc (which the tax bandits have had their slice), prior to this they had tax bills in the 70's that would make your hair curl now, (all down to shit accountant). So after having the rubber dick treatment from the tax man, when it comes time for a bit of payback she is denied any free care as there is way too much available in capital, investments, property etc.
I then find out the true horror is when/if the liquid capital runs out the time comes for the investments to be cashed in along with the sale of the house. Proceeds are managed by LA and cannot be touched. When THE LOT has gone rendering her penniless the LA will stump up and pay for her care.
I'm currently making sure everything is salted away and not owned by myself or wife when the time comes. I will not be had for a twat by the government.
Obviously it is too late for racegranny 1 to change the situation, and any salting away has to be done 7 yrs prior to care being required. I cannot obviously give instructions on here how to do it, but it is fairly obvious.

I can't recall the pizza chain, this happened a few years ago...
Them: Smoking or non-smoking?
Me: Smoking please
Them: I'm sorry, we only have non-smoking
Me: That's fine
[goes through process of ordering some pizza]
Them: Deep pan or thin crust?
Me: Deep pan please
Them: I'm sorry we don't have any deep pan, just thin crust
Me: [laughing now]Ok, thin crust please
[more pizza ordering]
Them: Would you like to order some drinks?
Me: Yes please, 4 cokes.
[waits for drinks]
Them: I'm sorry we've only got one glass, here's your coke, let me know when you finished it and I'll refill it.
Me: " "

No idea how old you are now, but I bet you'll change your mind about that when you're 69¾

Probably right
But if I was in the position of racegranny I'd want to end it all, probably a bit controversial but thats my opinion, she can no longer talk, eat, is paralized in all but one arm, and can't remember anything of her long and eventfull life, the state is robbing her of all her savings and if she live long enough her house
and I would rather see all the money go to charity than most of the family in inheritance
Just to depress you all a bit more, some facts on paying for 'residential/nursing home' care (figures are 2 years old so might have risen a bit):
If you have assets of >18k you cannot even make a claim for state help to meet costs, you are liable for the lot.
If you have assets >3k then you will be required to make a contribution to the costs (sliding scale based on your remaining assets).
Once your assets are <3k the local authority will pay for care (up to a max weekly limit, which is a pitiful amount) less any income that you receive.
You can claim for the nursing component of care home costs, but it's not very much.
Example: My old man has been in a nursing home for almost 2 years.
HE pays 3.4K per month!
When all of his money (read sale of house proceeds) has gone, he can get help.
But wait, his weekly private pension etc income comes to more that what the local authority will pay for care, so he will receive no help at all!
The 7 year rule for giving away your assets that has been mentioned in another post is for inheritance tax purposes. i.e. If you give your house to your kids to avoid inheritance tax & than die within 7 years, a proportion of the tax will be due. If you last >7 years then no tax is payable.
It does not apply to local authority assessments of assets. They can in theory, go as far back through your financial records as they like.

Growing old.
Yep, and I imagine it will get worse as the number of oldies gets to be greater percentage of the population.
(As it will)
My wife is a Geriatric Nurse but as wo are no longer spring chickens she now prefers just Nurse!
The care of the elderly is getting worse as they try to use less and less skilled staff in an effort to cut costs. So the elderly are often subjected to less than ideal care, they are kept in bed with little exercise! That's cheaper.
I have been thinking that maybe four oldies could get together, Three sell their houses move into the forth house hire a Nurse and a handyman and take it from there. This would maintain their dignity, their assets and they would have control over who tells them what to do!
It would need an equitable formular for establishing who owns what but could be an improvement on the present system.

The only way to 'win' in this country seems to be to scrounge off the state for your entire life.
Otherwise, best to spend it all 5 minutes before becoming incapable of looking after yourself (massive binge, anyone?)
Bloody right it is. My Gran is teetering on the edge of senility and we're trying to persuade her to "hide" the money she's scrimped and saved so that it doesn't get taken into account if she has to have full time care.
I'd like to say "piss it all away while you're young and let the state take care of you" but the way it's going the state will be incapable of looking after a dead dog by the time I get to that age...

Right, off on a slight tangent......
Say you could do a deal with the dark side,
You get a cracking hand delt you and life is sweet, all the toys you could every want (That new Aston is on the company car list) you live life like Hugh Hefner, but......it's all over at 65, brown bread, 6 feet under
Do you sign on the dotted line...........
Oh and while I'm still in a whinging mood, all this stop this, don't do that crap, and you'll live longer can kiss my fat one, the extra years you get are always the crappy ones at the end when all you can do is dribble and wish you'd done more with your life, now if they could get me back the 18-25 period that would be another story
