I don't think I’m allowed to name and shame companies because of the consequences that could happen. Instead I will call this well known British Telecommunication provide: X Ltd. Anyway, I was talking to someone 'in the know today' who had been to XLtd for a job, one of the things he found out was quite interesting and I was wondering if they can actually do this... The company concerned has telephone help lines, different types of questions and complaints have different numbers. The numbers all phone through to the same telephonist But certain numbers are made to wait longer. Their system makes sure that anyone calling a complaint number has to wait a minimum of 15 minutes before anyone will answer it. They said they do this in the hopes that the customer will hang up and not bother! Is this legal? Isn’t there some kind of regulation, Offtel rules of service? I’m glad I don’t use this company!

Hmmm... a British Telco called X *ltd* - not many of them around.....

However - back to the question - it all depends on what the phone number is and if the call is "picked up" or just left ringing.

If it is picked up and on whats called NTS at > local call rates or PRS (08 or 09) then yes, they are breaking ICTIS guidelines and can, if serious enough, have their numbers suspended.

Certainly if they have a PTO license then they would also fall foul of OFTEL guidlines.

If you want to take it further - email me via the profile and we'll talk off line.

[I'm assuming of course X Ltd isn't meant to be our company - but then we don't do that ]

Oh yes. Theres a well known Serviced office provider, with locations all over the world. When a customer telephones out, they leave the line open for 3 seconds after they have put the phone down. They make an awful lot of money on this scam alone...

I had a problem with a telecommunications company "X" recently. I got nowhere fast with the "Customer Service" people but amazingly one fax to a chap called (let's call him "Pierre Danon" to protect the identity of the company) and they couldn't have been keener to help!

Moral : Don't p**s about with the tossers on the "customer service" line, they don't want to help you anyway. Shout at the boss instead, he can make things happen. (Also works with Alliance & Leicester, Npower and many others).
