2100 hours last night, flying up the m-way at a perfectly respectable trott, cruise engaged, listening to the utterly insane Tenacious D creation on the Marcus Leviticus ICE system.

Rather nice spot of cuisine a la Asian sub continent nesting in the passenger footwell and all's well with the world then suddenly...

OHMIGOD - WALLOP!!!

Holy Guatamalen gonads - What the..?

Mr.HGV had shed an entire 9ft section of exhaust pipe right into my path and with zero time to react there was only one option - heavy metal crunch - here we go.

Urgh; sickening thud and where's Herr Reaper?

Staggeringly, the Lexotank just plowed on; I was white but it was quite unmoved...it didn't even shimmy. Utterly incredible stability. Frankly, had I been in the beetle, as I had been planning yesterday, I strongly suspect I would have been an ex-PHer right now...sobering stuff and momentary realisation that there's more to life (albeit not much) than cash, cars, mindless consumerism, exotic gallic femininity and fine ales.

So just remember guys and gals, next time you're tripping the light fantastic, be careful out there!

Glad you're OK DeR.

I just hope you slowed down and got the trucks reg number to report it to the police for being unroadworthy. If you were on a bike you wouldn't be posting this morning.

The force is obviously with you

Glad you're okay.. was the car undamaged then?

Tell me, amongst the panoply of features and gadgets, does the LS430 include spare underwear in a cubby under the drivers seat?

What, no auto-changer?

DeR, glad to hear you survived that close call, lets hope it did not spill your take away.

Managed something similar in my Alfa 164 a few years ago. Ran over a sizeable log on the M25 at speed. Would have whipped the TVR around in no time. The Alfa just ploughed over it.

Are you sure you didn't hit your head?

Seriously though, glad you're OK. BTW did it do the old plutobarge any harm?

phew! Glad you and the luxobarge made it through that one.

Similar thing happend to my Dad a couple of years back, again lorry exhaust dropped on the carriageway in front of him, pretty much removed the front tyre / wheel from his T5 leaving him after one hell of a slide on the hard shoulder.

I'd just like to know how the hell people are driving trucks about with major componets hanging off like this, it's bloody scary...

It's this kind of thing that makes me wonder whether I really should give up the merc tank for a 911...

I blame Tony Blair and twatty two jags, if they sorted out the train service then there would be no bleeding need to trucks to hog up the motorways and the world would be a better place.

Much damage to the luxobarge?

Blimey!
I don't think 164s like that sort of treatment.
I reckon Cats-eyes used to throw the tracking out on my 164........

Glad to hear that you survived this particular episode - just goes to show that luxobarges do have their uses afterall .......

Mind you, getting the curry stain out of the carpet could prove to be the real problem ..

Thanks for the responses guys; not sure the afterlife would have offered such endearing banter as proffered daily by your good selves!

It is a seriously sobering thing and when you weigh up the pros and cons of fantasy quandries like M5 or RS6 etc versus Cerby or Ultima, reminders that Dr. Death is always in one's rear view is a salutary realisation.

The car itself seems amazingly intact but it's currently getting an on the ramp going under, as well as tyre checks/replacement and full geometry check and balance.

Scary.

I hit a big lump of concrete in the Griff last year (well not that big) when I was on the M6. I was really worried that the car was shagged but the only damage was a lip spoiler. I guess I was lucky and managed to get it between the wheels. Still managed to shit myself.

I had a very near miss about a year ago on the M4. The big mud guard thing of a truck decided to part company and they fly backwards at me and the other cars in my vicinity!

Being quite big and flappy it was aerodynamically a bit erratic, to say the least! Fortunately us cars missed it, and in the mirror I saw a truck kill it.

Could have been worse, though...

Reminds me of the time I was faced with an unknown large metal object in the middle of the outside lane of an autoroute in Belgium. Needless to say I wasn't travelling particually slowly at the time.

The object concerned ended up lodged behind the exhaust box of the Cerbera I had at the time. It made a hell of a noise when I hit it and the resulting sparks, where quite spectacular!

A friend in a 911 behind me instantly thought, it was the Cerbera self-destructing!

Well done to the Lexus, its a shame that Lorry driver got away with it though. Hope the consultation on the car goes ok.
