Anyone know if the clutch is adjustable on a MK2 VW golf. On my sisters car the travel is right at the top of the pedal before you get bite. Is it just an adjustment or is she looking at a new clutch? She is thinking of flogging it (private sale) soon, so obviously does not want to go to the expense of replacing the clutch.
Any advice appreciated ....

I'm pretty sure that it's adjustable at the gearbox end of the clutch cable. It certainly is on a Mk1 Golf and I think the Mk2 is the same in that it uses the same rod-operated gearbox as opposed to the later cable change box that I think came in with the Mk3. Assuming this to be the case where the cable gets to the gearbox there will be a white knurled bit you can turn to take up slack in the cable. Then I think there's just a nut to lock it in that position.
I think from a post I saw somewhere that Iguana has a Mk2 Golf project on the go so can probably give a definitive answer.
Hope you are able to sort it.

Yep, as previously stated - self adjuster on Golf MkII's and they are a nightmare. Either the self-adjusting mechanism is stuffed (easily fixed) or the clutch is really wearing out. Most Golf nuts remove the troublesome self-adjuster and have a normal cable like everyone else....
But, it is worth pumping on the pedal a few times and then finding where the bite point is. This should give you a good guide as to the self-adjuster. You can force it catch the cable sooner, but by the sound of things (no comment of slipping clutch etc) its the clutch or the cable thats on its way out....

2 types of clutch cable on the Mk2's
1. Self Adjusting - if it's one of these and slack you're buggered, new cable needed.
2. Manually adjusting - I have this one in my Mk2 16v GTI, if it's this one you should be able to adjust it at the gearbox end simply by screwing the little plastic thing if you get some slack in the cable. Pretty easy.
Not sure what models had which clutch cables.
Post on www.clubgti.com/forum they are very knowledgeable, you'll get an answer in under a minute, it's a very busy site these days.
Sorry can't be of more help.
