Just wondering, what is the other machine (small and black, looks homemade) that they sometimes swipe your card through before putting it through the proper payment machine??

I just can't help thinking it's a card copier!

Sorry it's a boring question, but the quest for knowledge and all that ...

I believe one is for the petrol station till, and the other is the credit card co. therefore, attendant doesnt need to enter any details into the till

It is sometimes a separate machine for checking for stolen cards.

The majority of card "copying" that I have seen and heard of seems to happen at petrol stations.

A close friend of mine was burnt to the tune of about a grand when her card details were copied and subsequently used fraudulently, just before christmas.

Its believed that a certain garage in Luton was involved and the police are "looking into it".

Why not ask them what it is.

Not that I am aware of, you only need to enter the card in the POS device, this should be linked to the till directly, or the transaction will just be entered into the till as a card transaction.

The EPOS system that most garages use is 8-12 years old, and can't cope with SWITCH, DELTA etc. The 1st swiper is a separate unit that gives the Auth, the second is the Till - the Till waits for a simple yes/no from the auth unit before proceeding.

Many garages (Shell particularly) are replacing their old tills with new ones that only have a single swipe.

Nothing to worry about!

Well, they looked, but decided that there wasn't enough evidence to justify an investigation. as a result the activities of the "criminals" has been exponged from the crime stats. Several of the perpatrators have been awared lottery funding to pursue a claim against the Police on the grounds that it is against their Human rights for them to not be allowed to sue someone.
Their QC, Ms Cherie Booth commented that "society must not be allowed to discriminate against criminals in such a heartless fashion" she added " Everyones entitled to their big money day in court and I'm here to see that I get some of it, er,.. I mean they get theirs !"
The "victims" of the "fraud" have since been charged with wasting Police time, but other charges are pending.
The Chief Constable issued a statement in which he condemned the victims as , well, basically, victims.
"These people deserve what they got, they are probably speeders as well and we will be committing massive resources into investigating claims that at least 2 of the victims were clocked doing 74mph on the M1 last August bank Holiday. These people must be stopped! Don't they realise the misery they could have caused if they had hit a fleeing bank robber?"

Local BP station by us was employing people from pakistan who couldnt speak a word of english.
But i can tell ya this, they certainly knew how to nick your card details, and did so for a hell of a long time.
Its not the only BP station thats done this, employing foreigners that is.

I used to work with the company that makes those "Second Devices".

The second device as someone else mentioned is a device for checking for stolen credit cards. As far as I remember a list is distributed though the teletext service. There are normally two lights on the device, one red, the other green. This device stores the lists of cards and when a card is swiped a comparison is made and the approprite light illuminated.

Hope this helps.

My local Tesco petrol station was scamming my card in another way. This was a few years back and they have closed this loophole now I believe. I was a heavy user - anything between £60 to £100 a week in petrol and always filled up £20 each time. The till workers used to keep the number of my credit card (on their copy anyway) and enter it manually on another day for £20 - then nick £20 out of the till in cash.

If you are fussed the best way to avoid being scammed is to put in £20.14 of petrol on the 14th of the month and £20.15 on the 15th of the month etc...that way checking your credit card bill will be easier - they should all be in a row. Not foolproof I know!
