During the recent icy spell, Mrs Twin Turbo managed to kerb a wheel whilst slip-sliding up to a round-about. After taking it out for a spin (not litterally) my expert knowledge told me the tracking was U/S. Just a quick trip to the local tyre place...or so I thought.
Turns out the steering rack is bent (the steering wheel is pointing a 1/4 turn to the right when driving straight).
Now Mrs TT drives a '94 Golf GTi 16v (not exactly a rare beastie) so I asked the tyre place for a quote. After 3 days they've "not been able to get a quote from their supplier". Next I tried our friendly local MOT garage (never had a rip-offs there). They didn't seem to want the work, but mentioned trade price was £240, but that I should try a VW garage. Laugh? I nearly wept as the parts dept. at our local VeeDub place said it'd be £450 for parts, plus "about" £250 to fit it. SEVEN HUINDRED QUID FOR A STEERING RACK????

boosted ls1 said: Have you tried any of the major factors? I'm sure you could get a rack for a lot less if you ring around. Then you might be able to find a local garage to fit it. It will pay to shop around, I'm sure. Good luck.
Problem with that approach is, garages hate fitting customer-supplied parts. Half the profit they make is from the mark-up on the parts, plus if there's a problem with the new part it puts them in a awkward position

Eurocarparts quote £329 for a new genuine steering rack, and £180 for a reconditioned unit. Getting it fitted will be fun....

Is it definitely the rack rather than for instance a steering arm? (How do you 'bend' a rack without breaking it? It's a bl**dy great casting, isn't it?)
was told the steering rack leaked on my old prelude once at mot time, they suggested i took it to the dealer to have it checked out.......1250 quid to fit an overhall kit 
(parts were'nt that much but 12 hours labour!!)......or they could fit a new one,.......2500!!! 
(somewhat more than the car was worth!!) found one at a honda breakers for 100 got it fitted for 200 been fine eversince.
