Details of Harrigan's Remembrance Service

A Remembrance Service will be held for Harrigan on Friday 17th January, at 4.30pm at the St. Andrews United Reformed Church in Walton-on-Thames.

There is an open invitation to ALL PHers who can make it at such short notice. Heidi is comfortable with folks coming in their TVRs. As I understand, there will be some readings, one of which will be by Neal Garrett (LoveMyTVR) on behalf of Harrigan's friends on PH using some of the messages placed on the thread. After the service there will be some food and drinks.
Heidi has requested that rather than flowers, you might like to make a donation to her chosen charity, which is Starfish…a charity set up to take care of the needs of children affected by AIDS. Here is the web address for further reading.

Right folks, sorry I've bitten the bullet for an hour hoping that someone else would ask this but having just spoken to Mungo by phone I feel compelled to put my thoughts up, and ask for feedback
I feel it's would be kind of odd and possibly tasteless for this thread to go on like a PH meet "who's going" type thread but I know we both feel kind of odd and unsure about what we should do. I've never been in a position before where someone who I feel "I knew" but had only really briefly met once has died and then be faced with the dilema of should I / shouldn't attend the memorial service. I do genuinely feel that I "knew" Harrigan purely through his posts and can remember meeting him at BT&P to be left with the impression of "yep he's one of the good guys I like that bloke" but this really is a first for me where in reality I didn't really know him in the real world, (does this make any sense or am I failing to put my feelings over very well ?)
I'm currently leaning towards the yes I should drive round the M25 and show my respects as part of the PH community but unsure about did I know him well enough etc etc. Should I just leave it to Ted and a few others to "represent" the rest of us or would it be better to turn up in numbers to help his close friends and family really see that a lot of other people respected him a great deal and hopefully support them in that knowledge, sorry folks I just don't know the answers, whats the feelings of the rest of you ?

Mel - I understand your dilemma. My only advice is to do what you feel is right for you. I'm not sure that a concensus answer to your post will help.

I would just like to reiterate Jeremy's comments. If you would like to attend, please, please come along, whether you met Harrigan or not. I'd certainly like to see you, but that's just me.
My personal thought is that Harrigan would have a huge laugh seeing a line of sports cars in his honour.

A coupe of years ago I bought some accessories for the missus' MX-5 off a UK website that was set up by an enterprising 21 year old bloke who spooted a gap in the market and duly set up his site.
I e mailed him a couple of times and we were kind of e mail buddies. But I never met him.
Tragically he was killed about three months later in an RTA and loads of people went ot the service because we had his mums blessing that we would all be made welcome, and Rob was a total petrolhead and its what he would have wanted. His mum was well chuffed that loads of people took a day off to remember Rob and she was genuinely moved how he had touched so many peoples lives.
As Jeremy says, follow your feelings by all means, and give him the send off he deserves.

I won't be able to make it, but Karen will be attending on behalf of both of us. Only my opinion, but I think it's fitting that if you knew him (by whatever means) and want to attend as a sign of respect then you go. I'm sure there'll be quite a few people who in attendance knew more of him online than face to face.

I think especially for those who didn't know Harrigan, or didn't know him well, turning up might feel a bit like intruding on his family's grief.
But I can only say what I would want in similar circumstances. Nothing is going to make this day better for his family, but they might take some comfort in having such a clear message of respect for Harrigan - that so many people from the PH community would give up their time to express their admiration for his life and sorrow at his passing.
If you feel like you want to go, I'd say go and support them.

I've only just heard this tragic news, what a shock.
I had the pleasure of meeting Harrigan and Heidi at this years motorshow, where he was kind enough to let me have his spare TVR stand ticket. What a charming guy. My thoughts will be with Heidi and his family on Friday. RIP Harrigan.

I am new to PH's, but I can still see the position that some of you are in. Mel, I understand what you mean by knowing him through his postings and only meeting him once. I spoke to a friend who has actually met him and I dont believe he will be going to the service. He said that even though people there wouldnt judge him for not actually knowing 'him in person', he felt that he would still uncomfortable about being there as the feelings could be quite mixed and weird. I see what he means and as he said 'he was a genuine nice bloke' and he can still mourn for him in his own way. Some people who are in a similar position will go and some wont - its how you feel. IIRC Heidi has said that it is ok for PH's who would like to turn up can, and she would be happy for that.
Totally understand how people are feeling unsure about what to do on Friday - I guess each person has to decide for themselves what to do - with due deference to Heidi and Harrigan. However if you cannot attend but would like your response on p/h read out - let me know and I`ll ensure that your sentiments are passed on at the service.

Hello PistonHeads. What a magic forum you have to express your feelings.My name is Jonathan and I am Harrigans uncle fron Benoni in South Africa. I have read all you have to say and he really was all the things you said and more. He certainly touched a lot of people,even if he did not meet them in person.My family were one of the lucky ones- we had the pleasure of Harrigans company, with his smile and wicked sence of humor, on a number of occasions. These will be the times I will remember.My daughter Katherine and son Michael(who was with Heidi on Saturday) adored Harrigan and he them.What a blow ! Har's folks, Brian and Dawn and sister Samantha will be in the UK for a few days so if you are at the memorial service give them a hug. They need it. Let me tell you I am looking forward to giving Heidi a hug. I have spoken to her on a number of occasions and it seems she is holding out.She is just so far away ! Well Ph's thats me. Keep up this site it's magic. Cheers JP.
PS. I am a petrol head- even if a bit slower. I have two vintage cars.. A Austin 10 HP 4 cylinder 1934 and a Armstrong Sidderley 6 Cylinder 12 HP 1932. Both in running order. So there. Cheers again JP.

I didn't realise I had had contact with Harrigan until last night when looking for another email and there they were...He was full of concern in the eMails and that ties up with what everyone said about him. He was truly one of the good guys.
