Changing your car keys

I am a fan of the Mercedes/Audi/VW style key. It looks sweet and eliminate having a key stabbing my thigh when I sit down(no tight trouser jokes please) I want to convert the key to my jeep to something similar. I can't imagine it being to hard to do but I'm not sure where to find a company to do it.

I used to have a link to a tutorial somewhere - maybe post on the Club GTI forum, someone on there will know.

oh, and i agree - those flick keys are a brilliant idea, im sorely tempted to make one up myself!


Edit: on the other hand, why not just walk into VW and ask to get a key cut - im guessing they receive the flick keys with 'blanks' in, so they could just cut your key onto it?

a)you cant get a new key from VW without relevant registration and key numbers from a proper VW (eg mk4 Golf or something - i couldnt get one for my mk2 Golf)


b)you can get them on EBay

from what i remember, you have to pull a pin out, cut your key down, cut a groove into the side of the key and slot it in. Apparently it can be done but you cant get the remote locking button reprogrammed. (im sure it must be possible tho - all it does it emit a signal surely?)

Sir, you are a true PH. Thanks for the help. Not too worried about fitting an alarm just yet as I will be putting the Jeep key in. Not much security on a Jeep with zip access

Yeah, thankfully I haven't pi$$ed anyone off yet.

Just asked Mrs MARA to call the Merc dealer in the morning to see what the options are there. Merc key is very plain with the star very discreet. If it's all okay I'll send her in to pick one up(birds always get free stuff). Assuming that it's a guy working in the parts department I should be in business.

I would have thought that the ownership/key number problem is 'cos you'll need the correct transponder code embedded in order to deactivate the immobiliser.

Of course, this probably isn't a problem for your Jeep!

Also, the 'blank' keys for VW may not match the blanks for other makes, so cutting one might fail. IIRC VW keys have no 'teeth' as such that extend saw-like from the shaft, but have them kind of 'layered' on, if you know what I mean

No problem with the key as she'll take the SLK down there and get a spare key. As you said, don't need to worry about the electronics.

The style of our Merc keys are "saw like" and the jeep is the traditional style car key. Not sure if the unit will need hollowing out or if the key will just stick out. Hmmm
