Have any of you guys ever bought an old car for not a lot of money expecting it to die before too long?
I'll kick off with my trusty Suzuki Swift Gti 1.3 which I was driving when I was a student. I bought it as a short term run around when I had hardly any money and I kicked its ass everywhere.
It ran for 2 years with minor servicing in between until it needed some more expensive and not feasible repairs.

My first car was a VW Polo, old Y-reg with every body panel dented and pools of water inthe footwells.
Raced it like a mutha for a year and 28000 odd miles, had done over 100k by that time, started first time and never broke down.
First MOT i put it through, the testers said the emissions were better than a lot of new cars.
Then it all went wrong at once - suspension went, tyres, brakes needed changing, banging noises started up, clutch started slipping, the lot.Great car.

Seems like a lot of my cars have ended up in that category of old bangers, but the fave has to be the Anglia van that I bought for a pint of beer. (But I had to tow it away from the bloke's house). I put a bigger engine in, bolted on a set of wide wheels and generally tidied it up a bit and it went amazingly well. It even took my wife and I on our honeymoon.
The 1200 engine coupled with the original transmission meant the acceleration was pretty rapid (relatively speaking) and it embarrassed a lot of supposedly quicker motors away from lights. Trouble was it ran out of steam at about 80.
It was still going strong when I sold it 3 years later.

I remember something like that years ago in an advert on telly, can't remember what it was advertising but I remember them talking about 'Carlos Fandango Superwide Wheels' then driving said Anglia through a narrow gate and taking the wheels off!
