.. at 90 mph??
Well thats what happened to me the other day. Just drifting along, minding my own business, when I start to feel a bit of a vibration in my nether regions. Thought nothing of it and carried on..
But the vibration got worse. I thought perhaps it was the road surface, so carried on. And it got worse....
After about ten miles, the noise was still there, but stable - the back of the car seemed to be a bit looser than normal (but only a bit), and as it was raining, I decided to slow down (to about 60) and pulled off at my usual junction.
As I slowed for the roundabout, I heard a curious flapping noise from the back nearside wheel, so I pulled over - sure enough, a nice flat tyre, steaming gently, with the shoulder looking rather the worse for wear.
BUT, and this is the good thing - being a 35 series trye, it has those lovely rim protector ridges, there was no damage to the rim at all, despite having driven it at almost 90 for about 10 miles........ oops!!
Just goes to show what modern tyre technology can do for you.....
When the tyre was removed, all this melted and congealed rubber was inside it.

I did that once with a nearly new Pirelli PZero not so long ago. When I noticed what was causing the rumble I pulled over into a convenient underpass and since the sidewall didn't seem more than slightly worn, I thought I'd pump it up to get me another 20 miles to a garage.
Five minutes later, I'm lounging against the wall watching the auto compressor do its thing, up to around 30 psi, when BAAAAANGGG! the tyre explodes, a HYOOOGE cloud of dust envelopes the car, and I try to stop both my bowels and my heart from running away
Cue half an hour getting the Porsche inflatable emergency wheel out, swearing at the original wheel which won't come off, and starting off at a sedate 50mph. I saw bits of countryside off the M25 I never knew existed . . . .

I had a similar incident to MondeoMan when a rear 255/35 18 deflated on the M11. Same result, after 5 miles I decided to pull onto the hard shoulder to investigate and was horrifed to see the remains of a smouldering Dunlop stuck to the rim. At £220 each, you don't want that sort of incident to occur too often
