IIRC It was AC testin a Le Mans Cobra... As a result a "temporary" limit was imposed...

Edited to add: It was a Cobra giving it [mungo]johnny large potatoes[/mungo] at 183 mph.

Could be you're all correct.

IIRC the Cobra was the car blamed, but I think it is also stated that a crash involving an E-type played a part in it's introduction.

According to the junk I've got here... it was introduced because the boys at Coventry were using the M1 as a test track to find the top speed of the E-Type..!

Car in question is the only 150mph E-Type made... bit of a pre-production special to get the punters in (where have we heard that before) and testing was done on the M1... car reg "9600 HP"

Thats what I thought, saw a documentary on Sky about it

drivel/top gear/one of the others a few months ago said it was as a direct result of the AC Cobra being tested on the A1. However the "official" line is that it was introduced "following a series of serious accidents"

Ive been googling and Im coming up with a lot of results claiming that AC testing their LeMans Cobras at 180+ the year before the speed limit was imposed, on the M1, was responsible.

Ive also come up with a few claiming that Jaguar was responsible, in a similar manner.

Looks like it was common practice at that time to test racing cars on the motorway in the wee hours of the morning.
If both AC and Jaguar were doing this is likely that both contributed towards the imposition of a speed limit on the motorways.

In that case Im calling for an immediate boycott of both companies till they say sorry!!

E-Type was launched in 1961... I thought the Cobra was launched in '63..? (correct me if I'm wrong on the Cobra, as I'm not 100% sure)
