Where to get a cheap laptop?

Girlfriend wants to get a laptop for around £1000 must be good quality (I hate Compaq so not that). Must be quick delivery cos she wanted to buy one in Currys today but I stopped her.

Any recommendations?

Have you looked at PCWorld online (cheaper than the shop, or one of the big suppliers like Dabs? www.dabs.com/home.asp They've some reasonable stuff around the 650 mark.

Could try 'Dave' down the boozer, 30 second warenty, and you get what software you get, but you'll get plenty of change for a VCR, a Car Stereo and a Camcorder from £1k

Bonce, World Of Computers at Milton do Vaio kit, though I don't know how competitive they are on price. www.woc.co.uk

Also, various establishments on Totty Court Road in London sometimes have good prices on this sort of kit, assuming you can be arsed to go and get it. I usually can, on the basis that despite a journey, I can have it *now*. Sounds like this mode of shopping appeals to the GF...

Serendipitous thread, this one... The battery on my lovely Sharp mini-notebook (PC A280) just died and new battery is... £293!!! Since it's a PII with bugger all memory on it anyway, I think I might upgrade. Keep those suggestions coming!

I personally prefer Toshiba, good specs in the Satellite range, however, I get mine from the USA where they are only about half the price. Hungarian offerings are 6-12 months out of date and hugely expensive.

Dell stuff is good, just got a new super-tiny-silver one (not sure of the model name!) and it wasn't much more than £1k. It has DVD, CD-RW, PIII, 350Mb RAM, 20GB etc...

Well my advice is whatever you decide check out the warrenty first. Laptops are expensive to repair so a decent 3 year warranty is a most IMHO. Mind you must have a few exclusions like batteries only having 1 year etc. So check them very carefully.

Also, if she travels with it (especially abroad) check the warranty covers this. I know some companies (Sony? small manufacturers etc) will only repair your PC in the UK. Others (Dell, Toshiba? etc) will fix them anywhere in the world.

At the end of the day they all use pretty similar components it's how they mix them that differs.

I would suggest you look in some PC magazines for lpatop reviews (try their web sites for past reviews as well) to get a feel for performance and how robust they are.

Before you buy, what is she going to use this machine for? One of the most important things to me is a large screen and decent size keyboard. But also that all the peripherals *are* internal.

Take a look on www.lapland.co.uk, some of the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6xxx series look like what you may be after.
