Like cassettes and betamax I'm one of the people still with a 56k dial up. As a result, if I want to download any music or videos its preferable to just leave the computer downloading, unattended.

However, my ISP automatically disconnects after 10mins of inactivity. Are there any programmes out there which can avoid this? I imagine these would be on the naughty side but all advice welcome.

Have a look at your modem settings in the control panel, this might be what is making it disconnect, rather than your ISP.

Failing that there are "download managers" out there that will let you carry on with a download after losing connection.

However most of them are loaded with spyware...

My ISP emailed me to say that they do disconnect after 10 mins. Also, there is a monthly time limit which I exceeded....on my apparently 24/7 connection, WTF.

I'll just have a look at that google search.
